Job description

The Life Safety, Security & Access Control Coordinator is responsible for the operation, maintenance, inspection, coordination, and continuous improvement of the College’s life safety, security, access control, and related electronic security systems. This position helps ensure a safe, secure, and compliant campus environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the College community. The position serves as a key resource for the College’s fire alarm and life safety systems, electronic access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection, emergency notification, security systems, and other related technologies. The Coordinator coordinates with Facilities, Campus Safety, Information Technology, vendors, contractors, local emergency services, and regulatory authorities to ensure systems are reliable, properly maintained, and available when needed.

Life Safety Systems

  • Coordinate the operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of campus life safety systems
  • Support fire alarm, fire detection, emergency notification, mass notifications, fire suppression monitoring, and other life safety systems
  • Monitor system status and respond promptly to alarms, troubles, supervisory signals, and system deficiencies
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, testing, repairs, deficiencies, and corrective actions
  • Coordinate required inspections and testing with qualified contractors and regulatory agencies
  • Assist with ensuring College facilities comply with applicable fire, life safety, building, and accessibility requirements
  • Identify deficiencies and recommend corrective measures to reduce risk and improve campus safety
  • Assist with emergency preparedness, evacuation procedures, drills, and related life safety initiatives
Security and Access Control

  • Administer and maintain the College’s electronic access control system, including doors, card readers, credentials, schedules, permissions, and related hardware
  • Manage access control requests for employees, students, contractors, visitors, and other authorized individuals in accordance with College policies
  • Assist with establishing and maintaining appropriate access levels for academic, administrative, residential, athletic, and restricted areas
  • Troubleshoot access control hardware, software, network connectivity, locking systems, and related equipment
  • Coordinate installation, programming, repair, and replacement of security equipment
  • Maintain accurate documentation of access control devices, doors, panels, readers, locks, and associated infrastructure
  • Assist in reviewing access privileges and identifying outdated, unnecessary, or inappropriate access
  • Support security measures for special events, emergency situations, construction projects, and other campus activities
Video Surveillance and Security Technology

  • Supp9ort the College’s video surveillance/CCTV system, including cameras, recording systems, storage, monitoring equipment, and associated software
  • Troubleshoot camera and surveillance system issues and coordinate repairs with vendors when necessary
  • Assist authorized College personnel with video retrieval and system access in accordance with College policies and applicable laws
  • Maintain appropriate documentation regarding security system configurations and equipment
  • Evaluate emerging security technologies and make recommendations for system improvements
System Administration and Technical Support

  • Monitor system performance and identify potential failures, vulnerabilities, or maintenance needs
  • Respond to service requests and system problems in a timely manner
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and basic repairs where qualified
  • Coordinate specialized repairs and services with approved contractors and vendors
  • Maintain system inventories, equipment records, passwords/credentials, warranties, service agreements, and technical documentation in accordance with College requirements
  • Assist with system upgrades, expansions, renovations, and new construction projects
  • Review plans and specifications for security, access control, and life safety systems on capital projects
  • Coordinate with Information technology regarding network-connected security and life safety systems
  • Ensure changes to systems are properly documented and tested
Compliance and Risk Management

  • Assist the College in maintaining compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements, codes, standards, and regulations related to life safety and security
  • Support compliance with applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Building Code (IBC), OSHA, ADA, and other relevant standards and requirements
  • Maintain required inspection, testing, maintenance, and compliance documentation
  • Participate in campus safety assessments and security vulnerability reviews
  • Identify potential risks and recommend improvements to reduce exposure to the College
  • Assist with emergency response planning and business continuity activities involving life safety and security systems
Project and Vendor Management

  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors performing work on life safety, security, access control, and surveillance systems
  • Review vendor proposals, scopes of work, service reports, and invoices for accuracy and completeness
  • Assist with developing project scopes, budgets, schedules, and specifications
  • Monitor contracted work to ensure it meets College standards and approved specifications
  • Maintain positive working relationships with vendors, contractors, emergency responders, and regulatory agencies
  • Assist with procurement and evaluation of security and life equipment and services
Campus Support and Customer Service

  • Provide technical assistance training to authorized faculty, staff, Campus Safety personnel, and other users
  • Respond professionally and courteously to questions and service requests
  • Assist departments with security and access requirements for special events, new programs, renovations, and changes in building use
  • Participate in emergency response activities and provide technical support during system-related incidents
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding security systems, access credentials, surveillance information, and other sensitive College information
Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in an on-call or emergency response rotation as required
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies involving critical life safety or security system when assigned
  • Maintain current knowledge of security, access control, fire alarm, life safety, and emergency notification technologies
  • Participate in professional development and continuing education
  • Maintain required certifications and licenses
Other duties as assigned
  • Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent combination of education and experience in security technology, electronics, electrical systems, fire/life safety, facilities management, information technology, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience working with security, access control, life safety, fire alarm, electronic security, or related systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electronic and technology-based systems.
  • Working knowledge of access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection, fire alarm, emergency notification, and related systems.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn and administer specialized software platforms.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, floor plans, wiring diagrams, and system schematics.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively with multiple departments and outside contractors.
  • Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive security-related information.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate College vehicles, if required.
  • Experience working in a higher education, healthcare, government, or similarly complex institutional environment.
  • Experience administering an enterprise access control system.
  • Experience with electronic locking hardware, card readers, door controllers, and security networks.
  • Experience with video surveillance/CCTV systems.
  • Experience with fire alarm and emergency notification systems.
  • Knowledge of NFPA standards and applicable fire/life safety codes.
  • Experience working with security integrators, fire alarm contractors, electricians, locksmiths, and other specialty contractors.
  • Experience with project management and capital improvement projects.
  • Industry certifications related to fire alarm, access control, security systems, or life safety.
  • Experience with systems such as Lenel, Genetec, Avigilon, Verkada, Brivo, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Notifier, Edwards, or comparable platforms
