Job summary

Florida A&M University is seeking an experienced General Accountant to support the General Accounting section in maintaining accurate financial records in line with GAAP and GASB pronouncements. The role entails monthly reconciliations across operating, student, payroll, and research accounts, journals, GL reporting, and audit-ready documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field with two years of related experience, or a master's degree in a related field.
  • Possession of a State of Florida CPA Certificate may be required for some assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Reconcile financial records and perform monthly reconciliations of all University bank accounts.
  • Prepare monthly departmental P-Card journals in coordination with Procurement Services and Travel Department.
  • Generate General Ledger reports and schedules for audits and ad hoc requests.
  • Conduct financial research using various data sources and tools and ensure proper classification per GAAP and GASB.
  • Reconcile financial aid accounts and related Title IV programs; prepare schedules for annual audits.
  • Review internal controls and assist with journal reviews to ensure accuracy and proper accounting treatment.
  • Prepare university financial statements from multiple data sources and support audit documentation.
  • Document reconciliation processes for audit purposes and resolve discrepancies.

Position Vacancy Announcement

This position is part of the General Accounting section, which is responsible for maintaining accurate and complete financial records for the University in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements, and all applicable regulations. The section ensures compliance with GASB standards through consistent application of required accounting and reporting practices.

Summary

Key duties include reconciling financial records; Perform monthly reconciliations of all University bank accounts, including operating, student, payroll, and research accounts, including identification and resolution of outstanding items; Prepare monthly departmental P-Card journals in coordination with Procurement Services and Travel Department; Generate General Ledger reports (such as trial balances and ledger activities) monthly, as well as on an ad hoc basis; Perform financial research, using both transactional and summary level data, in various formats using a variety of methods including: Commitment Control, Queries, General Ledger reports, spreadsheets, and database applications; Perform financial aid-related reconciliations, to include but not limited to, Perkins Loan, Pell Grants Federal Direct Loans and other Title IV programs; and prepare comprehensive schedules and supporting documentation for annual audits. Regularly review internal control procedures and recommend enhancements to strengthen asset accountability; Assist with journal reviews by analyzing entries for accuracy, completeness, and proper classification in accordance with GAAP and GASB standards; Respond to departmental accounting inquiries by researching complex financial transactions, providing guidance of accounting policies; Prepare university financial statements by compiling data from multiple sources, verifying account balances, ensuring the correct application of accounting principles, and assisting with the preparation of supporting schedules for audits; and perform other reconciliations as assigned by the supervisor, such as reconciling subsidiary ledgers to the general ledger, ensuring timely resolution of discrepancies, and documenting reconciliation processes for audit purposes.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of related experience; or master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Positions assigned to this class specification may have additional requirements such as possession of a State of Florida CPA Certificate.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to determine work independently and meet deadlines; and,
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration or Accounting preferred.

Pay Plan

This is an Administrative and Professional (A&P) position.
