Job summary

The Salvation Army in Atlanta, GA is seeking a full-time kitchen helper to assist in cooking, food prep, and serving at the Red Shield Shelter. The role requires a high school diploma or GED and at least one year cooking for large groups.

You will help set up dining areas, maintain cleanliness, and support fast, safe meal service. Benefits include PTO, holiday pay, health/dental/vision insurance, life insurance, and retirement plans.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent; AND
• One year experience cooking food for large groups, OR
• Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities

• Assists with the cleaning, cooking, and preparation of a variety of foods and beverages utilizing kitchen equipment, utensils, and supplies in accordance with acceptable and economical cooking methods.
• Ensure that enough food is prepared based on the number of people to be served and that food is prepared in a timely manner as scheduled.
• Assists with serving food and beverages in a presentable manner; prepares plates for infants or persons requiring additional assistance.
• Assist with setting tables with plates, napkins and utensils or set up buffet lines for self-service.
• Assist with cleaning tables, chairs, floors, dishes, utensils, and kitchen appliances.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Ability to meet attendance requirements; Ability to read, write and communicate the English language; Ability to cook, taste, and smell food. Duties are usually performed by frequent walking and/or standing, kneeling, or squatting relieved by lesser periods of sitting. Work is performed in a normal kitchen environment where there may be limited physical discomforts associated with working around hot stoves/ovens or cold freezers.
