Job summary

University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee is seeking a Cook (1st and 2nd Shift) to join Dining and Retail Services in Milwaukee, WI. This full‑time University Staff role involves cooking for dining, retail, and catering venues and works closely with students and limited‑term staff.

Responsibilities include cook‑to‑order prep, training student workers, greeting customers, and maintaining safety standards. A diverse schedule is available, with multiple shift options.

Qualifications

  • Experience in various food service concepts.
  • At least two years of experience preparing food in a commercial kitchen environment.
  • ServSafe Sanitation Certification or equivalent.

  • Train and guide student workers (20%).
  • Greet customers, answer questions, and provide information regarding food preparation and associated activities (10%).
  • Adhere to federal, state, campus, and local safety regulations, policies, and procedures (10%).
  • Clean, inspect and maintain bakery equipment and work area to ensure adherence to safe food quality, handling, and sanitation processes and procedures (10%).

Job Duties

Cooks at UWM perform a variety of food preparation activities and related tasks according to quality and safety standards in dining, retail, and/or catering venues to ensure customer satisfaction and achieve departmental food service goals. This position works closely with students, student managers, and limited-term employees.

Availability / Schedule
  • Monday - Friday: 5:00 am – 1:30 pm
  • Monday - Friday: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
  • Monday - Friday: 12:00 pm – 8:30 pm
  • Tuesday - Saturday: 11:00 am – 7:30 pm and 9:00 am – 5:30 pm (Saturday)
  • Sunday - Thursday: 11:00 am – 7:30 pm and 10:00 am – 6:30 pm (Sunday)
Key Job Responsibilities

Required Qualifications
  • Experience in various food service concepts (full service, quick service, etc.)
  • At least two years of experience preparing food in a commercial kitchen environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic cooking skills: sautéing, broiling, frying, roasting, butchery, garde manger, pantry, breakfast cookery, etc.
  • Supervisor or lead worker experience in a food service environment (training, assigning tasks, scheduling subordinate staff)
  • Experience cooking food according to recipes, quality standards, presentation standards, and food preparation checklists
  • Experience working in higher education, hospital, or institutional facilities
  • Associate's degree or higher in Culinary Arts or related field
  • ServSafe Sanitation Certification or equivalent
