Job summary

The Saint Johns Program For Real Change in Sacramento, CA is seeking a full-time Cook. Under the supervision of the Program Director, you will oversee food preparation, maintain health standards, and manage kitchen staff.

Founded on the steps of St. John’s Lutheran Church in 1985, Saint John’s Program for Real Change has helped more than 30,000 women and children transform their lives from poverty and dependence to confidence and self‑sustainability. Dedicated to the eradication of homelessness, this up-to‑18‑month comprehensive residential program provides families with the tools they need to address the root causes as well as the symptoms of homelessness: mental health therapy, drug and alcohol counseling, life skills classes and a path to a high school diploma and employment training.

Position Overview

Position Title: Cook

Salary: $20.00-$25.00 Per Hour

Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Location: On Site Only - Power Inn Rd. Sacramento, CA

Schedule: Schedule will vary based on business needs.

About the Position

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the cook is responsible for food preparation, leading the kitchen crew, maintaining health standards, and proper food storage.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with food purchasing, preparation, cleanliness, and adherence to health codes and regulatory guidelines for a residential facility.
  • Supervise the preparation of assigned meals for the on‑site program participants.
  • Ensure all meals are prepared in accordance with approved menus, that meals are served on time, and keep track of the number of meals served to residents; keep culinary records.
  • Test all food prior to serving and retain a sample of each meal for 48 hours to determine possible food contamination.
  • Supervise participants assigned to work in the kitchen.
  • Maintain high health standards including cleanliness, sanitation, and wearing hairnets and/or caps and gloves in food preparation and serving areas.
  • Ensure equipment is in good operating condition and that temperatures are within proper standards, be constantly aware of fire and safety hazards and report repair/maintenance needs to Facility Manager.
  • Be familiar with State of California/Sacramento County Health Codes relating to the operations of a commercial kitchen and ensure compliance.
  • Label, date and store all leftover food in accordance with sanitary food handling requirements.
  • Always maintain professional standards with food preparation and handling, as well as maintaining a high level of good housekeeping.
  • Follow procedures for dispensing, retrieving, and counting all eating and cooking utensils during and after meal periods.
  • Receive and safely store all deliveries, maintain current inventory on all commodities and store goods.
  • Ability to be sensitive to trauma and gender while interacting with clients.
  • Must follow safety rules and be familiar with IIPP (Injury and Illness Prevention Program).
  • Other duties assigned by the Program Director.
Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in the efficient operation of a culinary area.
  • ServSafe Food Handler or Manager Certification.
  • A current CA driver’s license and proof of auto insurance are required.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Not currently on probation or parole. Must be discharged for at least three years.
  • Must pass a criminal background screening (Live‑Scan) and maintain biannual CPR certification, First Aid certification and annual Tuberculosis test results.
Physical Requirements
  • Standing/walking approximately 90% and sitting 10% of the time.
  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to hear and respond to simple and sometimes critical messages exchanged in noisy/high traffic areas.
  • Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Fluency in Spanish language (spoken and written).
  • Trauma informed training.
  • Experience working with a female population is preferred.
