Job summary

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is seeking a Controls Technician to install, maintain, and repair low-voltage electrical systems and HVAC controls across campus. You will balance and commission systems, interpret schematics, and complete work orders in a fast-paced environment.

This role requires the ability to read blueprints, use testing instruments, and cooperate with campus teams. A valid driver’s license, basic computer skills, and willingness to be on-call are essential.

• Ability to use testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and ammeters to test and diagnose low-voltage electrical and building control systems.
• Basic computer skills.
• Able to lift 50 lbs.
• Able to work from a ladder and/or aerial equipment.
• Available by cell phone to assist with campus emergencies and participate in regular rotations on the weekend and after-hours on-call schedule.
• Valid driver's license and ability to meet University driver eligibility requirements.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair low-voltage electrical systems and HVAC controls.
• Commission and balance HVAC control systems.
• Interpret and use schematics and blueprint drawings to install and troubleshoot electrical conduit systems, wiring, and device terminations.
• Use schematics to rough-in, wire, and terminate room controls, lab controls, and air handling and hydronic system controls.
• Perform common electrical activities and use testing devices to troubleshoot electrical and building automation control systems.
• Complete work orders and utilize an electronic timekeeping system daily.

Additional qualifications that support success in this position (not required):

• Associate's degree in Electrical Technology or a related field, participation or completion in an apprenticeship program, or equivalent experience.
• 1+ year experience performing room balancing and commissioning and/or installing and servicing HVAC controls.
• Experience installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical and low-voltage systems.
• Experience with Building Automation Systems front-end and/or back-end programming.
• Experience certifying and/or decontaminating biosafety cabinets.
• Familiarity with EMCS and/or CMMS.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
• Knowledge of building, electrical, and fire codes.
• Journeyman Electrician license.
• Type I, II, III, or Universal EPA refrigeration license.

This position is part of a career ladder with multiple levels based on qualifications, with pay commensurate with each level. Responsibilities at higher levels may include:

• Independently install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair low-voltage electrical systems and HVAC controls.
• Commission and balance room, air handling, and hydronic HVAC control systems.
• Test and diagnose low-voltage electrical and building automation control wiring and equipment.
• Confirm scope, schedule, and budget requirements of work assignments and coordinate changes.
• Train, mentor, and verify the work of other staff, students, temporary, and/or on-call personnel.
• Assist with project development, employee training, safety coordination, and departmental goals.

This position is full-time and is classified as nonexempt. This position has a set schedule and includes on-call responsibilities.
