Description

This skilled technician installs, repairs, and maintains electronic, pneumatic, and electrical controls in campus buildings. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance and repair of HVAC air handler units, controls, handicap automated doors, campus card access systems, fire alarms, security systems, and electric motors. The technician must be qualified to operate the Central Plant and all associated equipment and may supervise and instruct helpers as needed. Work is performed under general supervision and requires initiative, independent judgment, and a positive attitude toward the university community.

Examples of Duties
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs controls, including computer equipment related to HVAC building controls.
  • Works on pumps, appliances, motors, and fans.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all electronic and electrical components associated with controls.
  • Solicits bids and makes spot purchases as needed.
  • Inventories, orders, and receives stock.
  • Calibrates and tests all controls.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports on repairs and service.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and/or required.
Physical Condition

Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects over fifty pounds, ability to climb ladders and stairs. Requires an employment physical exam.

Experience

Five years of experience in electronics, pneumatics, HVAC, and general equipment repair, including construction of systems. At least two years with computer‑oriented equipment, including programming related to HVAC building controls. Vocational school training preferred; extensive experience in related fields also considered.

Knowledge

Complete knowledge of instruments and test equipment required for the work. Thorough understanding of electronics, pneumatics, electrical principles, and computer operation of HVAC building controls.

Education

Minimum high‑school graduation and vocational school training (or equivalent, such as 10 years of related experience).

Additional Requirements

Ability to follow oral instructions, blueprints, and schematics; ability to learn operation of the Central Plant and operate it when required; capable of making sketches or layouts and maintaining records; capable of supervising helpers efficiently. Must be available some nights and weekends, have an employment physical exam, serve on standby or on‑call basis, and may serve as Campus Security Authority per the Clery Act.
