Job summary

NorthBridge Commercial Real Estate seeks a seasoned Controller to oversee day-to-day accounting and financial reporting for a diverse CRE portfolio, including development, operating, investment, and holding entities. The role is hands-on with the general ledger and involves supervising accounting staff while supporting the CFO across the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
  • CPA preferred but not required.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory or accounting management experience.

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial statement preparation.
  • Hands-on payroll experience.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with Yardi Breeze or similar real estate accounting software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Full-Ccycle Accounting & Monthly Close: Perform and oversee day-to-day accounting activities, including journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, depreciation, and monthly closing procedures.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for multiple entities.
  • Multi-Entity & Intercompany Accounting: Maintain accounting for real estate entities, operating companies, partnerships, investment entities, and holding companies.
  • Reconciliations: Prepare and review bank, debt, escrow, reserve, intercompany, and other balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Commercial Real Estate Accounting: Handle property-level accounting, including tenant activity, lease-related transactions, CAM reconciliations, property taxes, insurance, capital expenditures, and debt activity.
  • Payroll: Manage and review payroll processing, payroll reconciliations, benefits deductions, payroll taxes, and related accounting.
  • Cash Management: Monitor cash balances, bank activity, debt payments, and cash requirements across multiple entities.
  • Accounts Payable & Receivable: Oversight of AP/AR, including invoice approvals, vendor payments, collections, W-9s, and 1099 reporting.
  • Budgeting & Analysis: Assist with annual budgets, forecasts, and monthly budget-to-actual variance analysis.
  • Tax, Audit & Lender Support: Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for external CPAs, tax return prep, audits, lenders, and ownership reporting.
  • Team & Process Management: Supervise accounting staff and drive process improvements.

Position Overview

The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting for a diverse group of commercial real estate, development, operating, investment, and holding companies. This is a hands‑on position responsible for maintaining accurate books and records, completing and reviewing monthly close activities, preparing financial statements, managing payroll, and supporting the CFO across the organization.

The ideal candidate has strong technical accounting skills, experience with both real estate and operating companies, and is comfortable working directly in the general ledger while also supervising and reviewing the work of other accounting team members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Full-Cycle Accounting & Monthly Close: Perform and oversee day-to-day accounting activities, including journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, depreciation, and monthly closing procedures.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for multiple entities. Ensure financial information is accurate, timely, and appropriately supported.
  • Multi-Entity & Intercompany Accounting: Maintain accounting for real estate entities, operating companies, partnerships, investment entities, and holding companies. Record and reconcile intercompany transactions and related‑party balances.
  • Reconciliations: Prepare and review bank, debt, escrow, reserve, intercompany, and other balance sheet reconciliations. Research and resolve discrepancies.
  • Commercial Real Estate Accounting: Handle property‑level accounting, including tenant activity, lease‑related transactions, CAM reconciliations, property taxes, insurance, capital expenditures, and debt activity.
  • Operating Company Accounting: Manage accounting for operating businesses, including revenue, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets/equipment, and operating expenses.
  • Payroll: Manage and review payroll processing, payroll reconciliations, benefits deductions, payroll taxes, and related accounting.
  • Cash Management: Monitor cash balances, bank activity, debt payments, and cash requirements across multiple entities. Assist the CFO with cash forecasting and liquidity management.
  • Accounts Payable & Receivable: Provide hands‑on oversight of AP and AR, including invoice approvals, vendor payments, collections, vendor setup, W‑9s, and 1099 reporting.
  • Budgeting & Analysis: Assist with annual budgets, forecasts, and monthly budget‑to‑actual variance analysis.
  • Tax, Audit & Lender Support: Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for external CPAs, tax return preparation, audits, lenders, and ownership reporting.
  • Team & Process Management: Supervise accounting staff while remaining actively involved in the accounting work. Identify and implement improvements to accounting procedures, internal controls, and systems.

  • Experience with commercial real estate accounting required.
  • Experience with operating companies and multi‑entity accounting strongly preferred.

  • Strong reconciliation and general ledger accounting skills.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with Yardi Breeze or similar real estate accounting software preferred.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple entities, priorities, and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Hands‑on mentality with a willingness to work at both the detailed accounting level and the Controller level.
