Job summary

Our client, a Dallas-headquartered real estate firm, seeks a seasoned Controller to lead financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash management across multiple entities. The role requires a minimum of 10 years in senior accounting within real estate and strong GAAP knowledge.

You will oversee accounting operations, manage a small team, coordinate with operations and sales, and drive automation and process improvements while ensuring timely financial statements and compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting.
  • 10+ years in a senior accounting role, preferably in real estate brokerage/development/investment sales.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, Bill.com and CRM systems (Syndex).
  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills.
  • Strong GAAP knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee cash management, forecasts, reconciliations and controls.
  • Identify process improvements and drive automation.
  • Support commission processing and closing statements for transactions.

Job description

Our client is a nationally recognized commercial real estate firm founded in 2009 and headquartered in Dallas, Texas, with core offices in Austin, Houston, and Phoenix. This position offers an exciting opportunity to guide financial stewardship, streamline processes, and contribute to the success of a fast-growing, award-winning real estate brokerage and development firm.

Position

The Controller will wear many hats and plays a vital role in managing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and title company relationships for our real estate company. The ideal candidate has at least 10 years of experience in a senior accounting role at a real estate company, strong knowledge of GAAP, QuickBooks, and advanced Excel skills.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the day-to-day financial operations of the company.
  • Lead and manage the accounting team (currently a small team handling commissions, AP, and other functions across multiple entities and offices).
  • Work with the operations and sales teams.
  • Point of contact and leader of the outsourced payroll management system and contractor.
  • Support financial operations across the brokerage offices, investment sales teams, and development activities.
  • Prepare, review, and assist in managing weekly, monthly, and quarterly financial reports, including commission processing, closing statements, and key performance metrics across brokerage, investment sales, and development activities.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis as needed for the brokerage, investment, and development operations.
  • Manage the ongoing analysis of company performance vs. budget (including detailed variance analysis) and updates to outlook and forecast.
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Collaborate with CPA firms on annual financial reviews, audits, and tax return preparation.
  • Oversee cash management operations, including cash forecast, reconciliations, funding/transactions, and account management in compliance with controls, guidelines, and policies.
  • Identify areas in need of process improvement and serve as a catalyst for change by driving automation, documenting workflows, and leveraging business intelligence tools.
  • Support commission processing and the preparation of closing statements for brokerage and development transactions.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting.
  • A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in a senior accounting role, preferably in real estate brokerage, development, or investment sales, is required.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, Bill.com, and CRM systems (e.g., Syndex) preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP.
  • Exceptional quantitative aptitude, highly analytical, creative problem-solver.
  • Attentive to detail, accurate under pressure, able to multitask and meet constant deadlines.
  • Highly organized, strong interpersonal skills, articulate in written and oral communications.
  • A team player works well with people at all levels of an organization and can work independently without the need for constant supervision.
