Essential Job Functions:
- Responsible for property accounting, accounts payable, financial reporting, business process improvement, team management and development, annual audits, and tax compliance. The Controller is responsible for leadership in the accounting department with an emphasis on the development and training of staff while directing and overseeing activities of property accountants and accounts payable team.
- Oversee property accounting’s monthly and annual close process to produce timely, efficient, and accurate month-end financial statements.
- Ability to record complex business transactions in the general ledger: property purchases and sales, property development and construction draws, accounting for incentives, entry of previous property management company financial data into accounting system.
- Lead the ongoing development and establishment of accounting policies, process enhancements, and system upgrades and drive continued focus on improving system efficiency.
- Drive operational excellence by spearheading transformative projects through the adoption of system, processes, and operational guidelines.
Qualifications:
- B.A. in Accounting and CPA required.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive accounting experience with a preference for at least three (3) years in a managerial or controller role within real estate industry.
- In-depth knowledge of real estate GAAP (with preferable experience with HUD accounting rules) and familiarity with partnership tax laws
- Proficiency in managing and developing ERP systems (especially multifamily real estate systems such as RealPage, Appfolio, and Entrata) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Proven ability to lead and develop a team, with strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
- High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail in financial reporting and analysis. Intermediate or advanced Excel skills and ability to work with large volumes of transactional data.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Proven ability to re-engineer processes for efficiency.
- Big 4 public accounting experience highly preferred.
- Multifamily real estate accounting experience.
- ERP system conversion experience.
- Must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship.
- Valid driver’s license preferred. Must have reliable transportation.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check is required.
