About the Opportunity

A growing technology company is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead its accounting function and strengthen the financial processes that support continued growth. This is a confidential search; company information will be shared with candidates selected to move forward.

This opportunity is ideal for someone who enjoys building, improving, and taking ownership. The Controller will strengthen existing processes, develop new ones as the business grows, and deliver accurate, timely financial information that leadership and the Board can rely on.

The role oversees accounting from end to end, including the monthly close, financial reporting, budget-to-actual analysis, client billing, accounts receivable, and accounts payable. Advanced Excel skills and confidence working with financial models and complex formulas are essential.

The Controller will also work directly with an outside tax firm and oversee consultants supporting finance and systems projects. Strong communication skills are critical, including the ability to explain billing matters clearly to clients and communicate financial information effectively across the organization.

Scope of the Role

This is an individual contributor leadership role with direct responsibility for day-to-day accounting activities and oversight of outside partners. There are currently no direct reports. As the business grows, the Controller is expected to help build and lead the finance team.

Key Responsibilities

Monthly Close and Financial Reporting

• Own the general ledger and monthly close, including reconciliations, accruals, and journal entries.


• Reconcile payment processing and gateway activity to the general ledger.


• Prepare accurate monthly financial statements and reporting for leadership and the Board.


• Deliver budget-to-actual reporting and explain material variances.

Billing, Accounts Receivable, and Accounts Payable

• Own client billing and serve as the primary contact for billing inquiries.


• Manage accounts receivable, collections, and escalation of past-due balances.


• Manage accounts payable, including vendor setup, approvals, and payment runs.

Tax and Outside Partners

• Coordinate with the outside tax firm, prepare supporting schedules, and ensure required information is provided to meet filing deadlines.


• Manage consultants supporting finance and systems projects, holding them accountable to scope, schedule, and budget.

Process Improvement and Financial Analysis

• Document accounting and finance processes and implement improvements.


• Maintain and update financial models and working files in Excel.


• Provide analysis to support planning and operating decisions.


• Help develop the finance function and prepare for future team growth.

Qualifications

Required

• At least 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of the monthly close.


• Experience working in a startup or small company environment.


• Advanced Excel skills, including financial models and complex formulas.


• Experience managing others, including outside firms and consultants.


• A proactive approach, strong follow-through, and a demonstrated ability to get things done.


• Comfort managing both day-to-day accounting responsibilities and broader financial priorities.

Preferred

• SaaS industry experience.


• Payment processing experience, including settlement and reconciliation.


• Experience working directly with an outside tax firm.


• CPA designation welcome, but not required.
