Controller
Our client, a high-growth enterprise software company, is seeking a Controller to establish and scale its accounting function during a period of rapid expansion.
Location
San Francisco, CA. The position is on‑site, with flexibility for occasional remote work as needed.
Job Description
The organization is implementing new systems, growing its customer base, and preparing for increased reporting and compliance needs. This role is ideal for a hands‑on accounting leader who enjoys building processes, partnering cross‑functionally, and creating a scalable financial foundation.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the month‑end and year‑end close, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and completeness of financial results
- Develop and maintain revenue recognition policies aligned with applicable accounting standards
- Lead the implementation and optimization of financial systems, including designing scalable workflows and controls
- Manage key accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger operations
- Create, document, and maintain internal controls, policies, and procedures that support efficient and compliant operations
- Lead and manage the annual audit, tax preparation processes, and interactions with external audit and tax partners
- Partner with Finance and leadership to support financial reporting, analysis, and decision‑making
- Build and develop the accounting team over time as the company continues to scale
- Support process improvement initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and financial visibility
- Collaborate with internal teams such as Finance, Legal, Operations, and Product on cross‑functional initiatives requiring accounting input
Requirements
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership within high‑growth or SaaS‑based organizations
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA required
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, including revenue recognition
- Experience implementing or significantly improving ERP systems
- Proven experience supporting audits, compliance requirements, and documentation
- Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work in a fast‑moving environment
- Preferred but not required: experience as an early accounting hire, public accounting background, familiarity with procurement or spend‑management tools, and exposure to international accounting considerations
