We are partnering with a highly regarded investment firm to identify a Controller who will lead and help scale the firm's finance and fund operations function. The firm has a venture capital-focused investment strategy, with select private equity investments, and is continuing to grow its platform.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced fund accounting professional who enjoys working closely with senior leadership, managing complex fund structures, and improving processes in a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment. The Controller will oversee core fund and management-company accounting, financial reporting, investor reporting, and relationships with external service providers.
Responsibilities
- Lead the accounting, financial reporting, and operational activities for the firm's investment funds, management company, general partner entities, and related structures.
- Oversee the quarterly and annual close process, including review of financial statements, capital account activity, investment activity, management fees, expenses, and allocations.
- Manage and review fund administrator deliverables, including NAV calculations, capital calls, distributions, investor statements, and financial reporting packages.
- Oversee management company accounting, including cash management, accounts payable, payroll-related activity, budgeting, and financial reporting.
- Partner with the investment team, legal, tax advisors, auditors, and fund administrators on fund launches, investment closings, exits, valuations, and other strategic transactions.
- Support fund operations across capital calls, distributions, subscriptions, transfers, side letters, and investor onboarding.
- Coordinate the annual audit process and support tax reporting activities, including review of tax deliverables and investor K-1 timelines.
- Maintain and strengthen accounting policies, internal controls, operational procedures, and documentation.
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting or finance team members as the organization grows.
- Identify opportunities to improve systems, reporting, workflows, and service-provider management.
- Provide thoughtful financial analysis and operational insight to senior leadership.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA strongly preferred.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting or fund administration experience, including meaningful experience within venture capital, private equity, investment management, or alternative investments.
- Strong understanding of private fund structures, partnership accounting, capital activity, investment accounting, and investor reporting.
- Experience working with fund administrators and external audit and tax providers.
- Familiarity with venture capital fund operations and private equity investment structures preferred.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting.
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities, lead projects, and communicate effectively with senior stakeholders.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with fund accounting, ERP, or financial reporting systems.
- A collaborative, detail-oriented, and hands-on leadership style.
