The ideal candidate will bring 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, and strong leadership and communication skills to drive performance

Job description

Our client is an organization in the Madison area looking for a Controller. Our client is looking for an experienced accounting professional who can provide leadership across financial reporting, accounting operations, tax compliance, and financial analysis. This individual will oversee an established accounting function while also partnering across the organization on financial planning, business analysis, and strategic initiatives.

The salary range for this position is $120k-150k.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide leadership and oversight of the accounting function, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Oversee the monthly and annual close processes while providing guidance and review to accounting team members responsible for day-to-day execution.
  • Coordinate year-end audit activities and serve as a key contact for external auditors.
  • Review financial statements, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Oversee sales and use tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions and coordinate other tax-related activities with external resources.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and procedures.
  • Provide financial analysis and insights to support leadership and operational decision-making.
  • Analyze profitability, margins, pricing, and other key business performance drivers.
  • Lead and support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
  • Partner with business leaders to understand financial results, identify trends, and evaluate opportunities for improved performance.
  • Participate in accounting system implementations, enhancements, and other technology-related initiatives.
  • Provide accounting expertise during system testing and ensure financial information appropriately integrates with the general ledger.
  • Prepare and present financial information to executive leadership and other business stakeholders.
  • Manage, coach, and develop accounting team members while establishing clear priorities and expectations.
  • Support special projects, financial analysis, and other business initiatives as organizational needs evolve.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience required; 7-8+ years strongly preferred.
  • Strong general accounting foundation with experience in financial reporting, month-end close, and year-end audit activities.
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred, with the ability to effectively guide and develop accounting professionals.
  • Public accounting experience preferred but not required; candidates looking to transition directly from public accounting with appropriate experience will be considered.
  • Exposure to sales tax, income tax coordination, or other corporate tax responsibilities preferred.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, profitability analysis, or other business-focused financial analysis.
  • Systems implementation, conversion, or accounting technology project experience is a plus.
  • Strong ability to prioritize competing responsibilities and maintain progress across multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the confidence to present financial information to senior leadership and non-finance stakeholders.
  • Proactive and resourceful with the ability to independently identify priorities and move initiatives forward.
  • Strong business judgment with the ability to balance accounting leadership, financial analysis, team development, and project responsibilities.
