Job description

Compensation: $150-175K

We are seeking a hands‑on Controller to lead the accounting and finance function for a growing commercial construction company. This is a highly visible opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys operating in a lean, entrepreneurial environment and has the ability to bring structure, process, and discipline to an organization that has historically relied heavily on a bookkeeper‑led accounting function.

The Controller will take ownership of the company's accounting operations, strengthen financial reporting and internal controls, and establish scalable processes that support continued growth. This individual will work closely with company leadership and operational teams to provide accurate, timely financial information and improve visibility into project performance and profitability.

The ideal candidate is comfortable rolling up their sleeves and doing the work, while simultaneously building processes and systems that allow the company to grow beyond its current accounting infrastructure.

Construction industry experience and hands‑on WIP accounting / percentage‑of‑completion experience are required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take ownership of the company's day‑to‑day accounting and financial reporting functions in a lean environment.
  • Professionalize and enhance an accounting function that has historically been managed primarily by a bookkeeper.
  • Establish and improve accounting policies, procedures, controls, and workflows.
  • Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close process and ensure financial statements are accurate and timely.
  • Manage Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting, including project-level revenue recognition, cost-to-complete estimates, job profitability, and under/over-billings.
  • Partner closely with project managers and operations to ensure job costing, budgets, change orders, committed costs, and project forecasts are accurately reflected in the financials.
  • Analyze project financial performance and identify variances, margin issues, and potential risks.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, cash management, and general ledger activity.
  • Improve the accuracy and consistency of job costing and project accounting.
  • Develop meaningful financial reporting and dashboards for company leadership.
  • Establish appropriate internal controls and segregation of duties as the organization grows.
  • Coordinate tax, audit, banking, insurance, and other external financial relationships as needed.
  • Assist leadership with budgeting, forecasting, cash‑flow management, and financial planning.
  • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline accounting processes and systems.
  • Serve as a financial business partner to leadership and operations, providing insight rather than simply reporting historical results.
  • Build and develop the accounting function over time as the company's needs and transaction volume increase.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with significant experience in the construction industry.
  • Required: Hands‑on experience with WIP accounting and percentage‑of‑completion revenue recognition.
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting, including job costing, billings, retainage, change orders, committed costs, and project profitability.
  • Experience managing or significantly improving an accounting function in a small or midmarket company.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial statement preparation.
  • Experience with month‑end close and financial reporting.
