Job summary

Vaco by Highspring is seeking an Accounting Manager in San Francisco for a hybrid role requiring on-site presence several days per week. You will lead the full accounting cycle, drive the month-end close, and partner with operational leaders to deliver accurate project and financial reporting.

The ideal candidate has construction accounting experience, strong knowledge of billing, payroll, job costing, and WIP reporting, and a track record of process improvement in a growing organization.

Qualifications

• Construction or project-based accounting including job costing and WIP reporting.
• Strong knowledge of GL, AP, AR, payroll, reconciliations and financial reporting.
• Proven ability to improve processes, shorten close timelines and strengthen controls.
• Hands-on leadership and collaboration with project managers and senior leadership.

Responsibilities

• Manage project billing, job costing, and WIP reporting for accurate project costs.
• Ensure AP/AR, payroll, and cash activities are recorded and integrated in close.
• Partner with project managers to review performance, investigate variances, and resolve issues.
• Prepare financial reports and insights on project profitability and cash flow.
• Coordinate with external accounting, payroll, tax, and audit providers.
• Develop and improve accounting policies, controls, and scalable workflows.
• Identify opportunities to use technology and automation to enhance efficiency.

Accounting Manager

Our client, an established construction & architectural services company, is seeking an Accounting Manager to lead and strengthen its internal accounting operations.

Location

This role is hybrid in San Francisco. On-site attendance is expected approximately 3 to 4 days per week during the initial onboarding period, transitioning to approximately 2 to 3 days per week once established.

Job Description

This hands-on role will oversee the full accounting cycle, improve the month-end close, and partner with operational leaders to ensure accurate project and financial reporting. The ideal candidate brings construction accounting experience, understands how billing, payroll, job costing, and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting connect, and is motivated to improve processes within a growing organization.

Responsibilities

• Lead the monthly close process and improve the timeliness, accuracy, and consistency of financial reporting


• Oversee general ledger accounting, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules


• Manage construction accounting activities, including project billing, job costing, work-in-progress reporting, and project-level financial analysis


• Ensure accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash activity are accurately recorded and integrated into the close


• Partner with project managers and operational leaders to review project performance, investigate variances, and resolve accounting issues


• Prepare financial reports and provide clear insights into project costs, profitability, cash flow, and overall business performance


• Coordinate with external accounting, payroll, tax, and audit providers while bringing greater ownership of accounting activities in-house


• Develop and improve accounting policies, internal controls, documentation, and scalable workflows


• Evaluate opportunities to use technology and automation to improve accounting efficiency and reporting quality


• Supervise and develop an accounting team member while remaining actively involved in day-to-day execution

Requirements

• Progressive accounting experience with significant responsibility for the full-cycle month-end close


• Construction or project-based accounting experience, including job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and project billing


• Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, reconciliations, and financial reporting


• Demonstrated ability to improve accounting processes, shorten close timelines, and strengthen internal controls


• Hands-on leadership and business-partnering skills, with the ability to work effectively with accounting staff, project managers, and senior leadership
