Highspring LLC (d/b/a Vaco by Highspring) is seeking an Inventory Controller to join our team in Midtown. The role focuses on ensuring accurate inventory records, reconciling accounts, and supporting financial statements and audits.

The successful candidate will lead cycle-counts, justify discrepancies at the SKU level, and work with Finance to ensure accurate COGS and PPV metrics. Strong ERP and Blue Cherry experience is preferred.

Job description

Our client in the Retail/ Wholesale industry is seeking an Inventory Controller to join their team. This role will sit in Midtown. The ideal person will have retail/wholesale industry expertise. The ideal candidate will be tasked with:

  • Ensure inventory-related accounts are properly supported and reconciled.
  • Investigate and resolve unexplained differences between operational systems and the financial statements.
  • Prepare detailed month-end inventory schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Analyze inventory-related journal entries and adjustments for accuracy and completeness.
  • Work directly with Finance and Accounting to ensure inventory balances and related COGS are accurate.
  • Support external auditors by providing detailed inventory reconciliations, valuation support, count documentation, and explanations of variances.
  • Take full ownership of the accuracy and integrity of inventory records across the organization.
  • Perform and oversee detailed book-to-physical inventory reconciliations.
  • Investigate discrepancies at the SKU/item level and determine the root cause rather than simply posting an inventory adjustment.
  • Analyze discrepancies related to receiving, shipping, transfers, returns, damaged goods, timing differences, system transactions, and costing.
  • Establish appropriate cycle-count procedures and monitor results.
  • Lead and oversee annual physical inventory counts and ensure accurate results are incorporated into the accounting records.
  • Develop reporting to identify recurring inventory discrepancies and control weaknesses.
  • Ensure inventory transactions are recorded accurately and in the appropriate accounting period
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of the company's inventory costing methodology and ensure it is properly applied.
  • Analyze standard cost versus actual cost and understand the financial impact of cost changes.
  • Review purchase costs, freight, duties, landed costs, surcharges, and other costs included in inventory valuation.
  • Identify unusual or unexplained inventory cost fluctuations.
  • Review and analyze inventory valuation and determine whether recorded costs appropriately reflect the underlying economics of the inventory.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of inventory reserves and valuation adjustments.
  • Understand the impact of inventory costing on COGS, gross margin, PPV, and financial results.
  • Ensure inventory valuation is properly supported and can withstand detailed internal and external audit review.
  • Take ownership of PPV reporting and analysis.
  • Analyze PPV by vendor, product, SKU, purchase order, and other relevant categories.
  • Investigate significant PPV fluctuations and determine the actual business drivers.

Qualifications
  • 15+ years of substantial inventory Controller experience
  • Extensive experience with inventory accounting and inventory control.
  • Strong experience with Purchase Price Variance (PPV).
  • Extensive experience performing book-to-physical inventory reconciliations.
  • Strong understanding of inventory subledgers and their relationship to the general ledger and financial statements.
  • Strong understanding of the accounting impact of inventory transactions on COGS and gross profit.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including the ability to work with large data sets and perform detailed analysis.
  • Strong ERP experience; Blue Cherry experience is highly desirable.
