Job description

A growing, entrepreneurial specialty automotive company is seeking a Controller to join its leadership team and report directly to the CFO. This is a highly hands-on opportunity for a strong technical accounting professional who enjoys taking ownership, building processes, and making an immediate impact within a growing organization.

The company operates across both vehicle customization/upfitting and e-commerce, creating a dynamic environment with a mix of operational and consumer-facing business activities.

The Controller will oversee the day-to-day accounting function, lead the month-end and year-end close, ensure accurate financial reporting, and strengthen accounting processes and internal controls. This person will also manage a small accounting team and partner closely with operations, purchasing, and senior leadership.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee all daily accounting operations, including general ledger, treasury, AP, AR, and inventory accounting
• Own the monthly and annual close process, including accruals and journal entries
• Prepare and publish financial statements and lender reporting packages
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and maintain strong accounting policies and internal controls
• Manage sales tax compliance, filings, and audits
• Oversee inventory accounting across raw materials, WIP, and finished goods
• Coordinate physical inventory counts and ensure inventory reporting accuracy
• Lead external audits and serve as the primary contact for auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions
• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of two accounting professionals
• Identify and implement process improvements across the accounting function
• Partner cross-functionally with operations, purchasing, and leadership to support business objectives

Ideal Background

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Prior supervisory or management experience
• Strong technical accounting and GAAP knowledge
• Proven experience preparing and reviewing financial statements and complex journal entries
• Strong inventory accounting experience is required
• Experience with raw materials, WIP, and finished goods
• Experience managing sales tax compliance and external audits
• Strong month-end/year-end close experience
• Hands-on leadership style with a willingness to work at both the strategic and detailed levels
• Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
• QuickBooks experience required; ERP experience is a plus
• NetSuite, Shopify, Amazon, or automotive/shop management system experience is a plus
• CPA and/or public accounting experience preferred
