Position Summary

The Consumer Loan Underwriter Associate is responsible for underwriting Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) loan applications by reviewing credit, income, assets, liabilities, collateral, and overall borrower eligibility. The Underwriter Associate analyzes risk, calculates qualifying ratios, evaluates compensating factors, and makes lending decisions in accordance with credit union policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.

In this role, you will provide support to branch staff, loan personnel, members, and vendors to ensure timely, accurate, and professional service while safeguarding credit union assets. You will also serve as a partner by communicating with members, branch staff, title companies, and vendors to obtain outstanding items, clear conditions, monitor pipeline progress, maintain accurate loan records, and assist with file preparation for closing and funding. As the Consumer Loan Underwriter Associate, you will manage the loan process from application through closing by ordering, reviewing, and tracking third-party services such as title reports, property valuations, inspections, flood determinations, and attorney reviews.

This position is located at our HSFCU Headquarters in Downtown Honolulu.

Base Annual Salary Range: $63,000 ($30.28/hour) - $81,060 per year ($38.97/hour)

  • Completes all underwriting functions in accordance with various credit union program requirements and related legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Reviews valuations and ensures risks are appropriate and meets guidelines for applicable loan types, including adequacy of collateral values to cover minimum loan requirements.
  • Evaluates applicant’s employment history, ensuring the probability of continued employment and verifies employment history. Assesses overtime, bonuses, and commissions used to qualify. Analyzes tax returns and balance sheets of self-employed applicants.
  • Manages the loan process from application through closing by ordering, reviewing, and tracking third-party services such as title reports, property valuations, inspections, flood determinations, and attorney reviews.
  • Communicates with members, branch staff, title companies, and vendors to obtain outstanding items, clear conditions, monitor pipeline progress, maintain accurate loan records, and assist with file preparation for closing and funding.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
  • 2-4 years of related experience in Loan Underwriting.
  • Knowledge of consumer and home equity lending practices.
  • Understanding of related legal and regulatory standards, and required loan documentation.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in work environment or work process.
  • Able to work efficiently and in an organized manner.
  • High school diploma or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
  • Prior work experience in a credit union or financial institution.
  • Familiarity with loan origination systems (LOS) and underwriting platforms (e.g., MeridianLink, Origence, etc.).
