Job summary

The City of Albuquerque is seeking a lead foreman to supervise and perform complex carpentry, cement-finishing, and related construction tasks for facilities and parks. You will plan, train, and review the work of staff, read blueprints, and oversee equipment usage to ensure quality and safety.

You will ensure work adheres to standards, coordinate with other trades, and meet project timelines while maintaining a focus on public service and community impact.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 30 vocational credits in carpentry, plumbing or welding.
  • Three (3) years of construction experience.
  • Valid New Mexico Driver's License and COP within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, plan, train and review the work of staff responsible for construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of facilities, parks and equipment.
  • Plan, direct, and participate in construction activities; oversee buildings, parks, sidewalks and drive pads.
  • Train staff in rough- and finish-carpentry, cement-finishing and welding methods.
  • Supervise use and operation of construction equipment including dump trucks and small equipment.
  • Verify work accuracy and compliance with standards and specifications.
  • Construct buildings, structures and parks with block, concrete and metal.
  • Oversee cement-finishing tasks; form, level and finish sidewalks, drives, posts, gates and signs.
  • Read blueprints and sketches to ensure conformance with project specs.
  • Perform and oversee other construction tasks including fence installation, painting, plastering, welding and plumbing.
  • Respond to public inquiries and resolve complaints; ensure safe work practices.

Lead, oversee and participate in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of facilities/structures and parks; perform the most difficult carpentry and cement-finishing tasks and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Lead, plan, train and review the work of staff responsible for the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of facilities, parks and equipment.
  2. Plan, direct, and participate in all construction activities; oversee construction of a wide variety of facilities and structures including buildings, parks, sidewalks and drive pads.
  3. Train assigned employees in their areas of work including rough-carpentry, finish-carpentry, cement-finishing and welding methods, procedures and techniques.
  4. Supervise the use, care and operation of construction equipment including dump truck and small equipment.
  5. Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  6. Construct buildings, structures and parks utilizing a variety of building materials including block, concrete and metal.
  7. Oversee cement-finishing tasks; form, level and finish sidewalks, drive pads, fence posts, gates, gutters, spillways, headwalls, curbs, picnic tables, steps, walks, signs and poles.
  8. Read and interpret blueprints and sketches to ensure that construction conforms to project specifications.
  9. Perform and oversee other construction tasks including fence installation, painting, plastering, welding and plumbing.
  10. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  11. Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
  2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours vocational training in carpentry, plumbing, or welding;

Three (3) years of construction experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Environmental:

Field and construction site environment; travel from site to site; work around traffic and construction equipment; exposure to fumes, dust, noise and inclement weather conditions.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, walking, crouching, bending, and climbing for prolonged periods; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; operating motorized vehicles and equipment.
