Job summary

Parks- in Albuquerque, NM seeks skilled tradespeople for the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of city facilities and parks. Tasks include rough and finish carpentry, masonry, painting, plumbing, basic electrical, fencing, roofing, tiling, and sheetrock work.

Position requires reading blueprints and diagrams, safely performing a range of trades, and keeping worksites clean and compliant with city standards. An NM driver’s license and COP within six months are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 30 credit hours of specialized training in construction, carpentry, plumbing, or welding.
  • Two (2) years general construction experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of construction tasks involved in renovation of city buildings and parks, including rough and finish carpentry, masonry, painting, plumbing, electrical, roofing, tiling and sheetrock.
  • Read blueprints, sketches and diagrams to ensure project specifications are met.
  • Repair and remodel interiors; install ceramic floor tiles, carpet and sheet vinyl; install paneling and paint.
  • Construct and repair fencing, doors, windows, and office furniture; adhere to safe work practices.

Job description

Participate in the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of facilities/structures and parks; perform a variety of construction tasks involved in the renovation of wooden, concrete, brick or metal City buildings including rough and finish carpentry, masonry, block laying, painting, plumbing, basic electrical, minor welding, plastering, roofing, tiling, fence installation and sheetrock work and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  1. Perform a variety of construction tasks involved in the renovation of wooden, concrete, brick or metal City buildings including rough and finish carpentry, masonry, block laying, painting, plumbing, basic electrical, minor welding, plastering, roofing, tiling, fence installation and sheetrock work.
  2. Perform interior and exterior rough carpentry for buildings, parks and facilities; frame building additions, stairs and ramps.
  3. Construct cement structures and facilities including forms for sidewalks, drivepads, fence posts, gates, gutters, curbs, steps, walks, ramp landings; pour, level and finish cement.
  4. Read and follow blueprints, sketches and diagrams to ensure project specifications are met.
  5. Repair and remodel building interiors; install ceramic floor tiles, carpet and sheet vinyl; install paneling; repair, tape, texture and paint sheetrock.
  6. Construct high-tensile fencing, chain link fencing and other fencing as required; operate hydraulic and power equipment.
  7. Install and repair wood and metal doors, frames and windows; adjust or replace hinges, high security locksets and cores.
  8. Perform finish carpentry; construct office furniture, cabinets, desks, shelving, conference tables, picture frames, ceiling and doors.
  9. Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Perform project lead supervision and training of laborers or helpers to accomplish construction tasks.
  2. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  3. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours of specialized training in construction, carpentry, plumbing, or welding; and Two (2) years general construction experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.

Environmental

Field and construction site environment; travel from site to site; work around traffic and construction equipment; exposure to fumes, dust, noise and inclement weather conditions.

Physical

Essential and supplemental functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, walking, crouching, bending, and climbing for prolonged periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; operating motorized vehicles and equipment.
