Job summary

Solid Waste Management in Albuquerque, NM, is seeking a skilled equipment operator to support road, street, and waste disposal maintenance. You will handle a range of equipment including graders, loaders, forklifts, and water trucks, performing grading, loading, sweeping, snow plowing, and related tasks.

Responsibilities include debris clearance, road/lot repairs, and transporting materials between sites; you must meet education and certification requirements and maintain safe work practices

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 30 vocational hours in maintenance/operation of equipment.
  • 1 year construction equipment operation and maintenance experience.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico CDL Class A or B (for Solid Waste Dept).
  • Possession of a City Operator's Permit within six months of hire.
  • OSHA Forklift Operator certification within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Operate medium to large construction and maintenance equipment (motor grader, forklift, front-end loader, water truck, pile of tools) to support multiple maintenance tasks.
  • Grade roads and facilities; roll asphalt and perform related paving support.
  • Load waste products from sites onto trucks and transport to disposal locations.
  • Clear debris, maintain drainage, and haul trash, debris, dirt, sand, and gravel.
  • Perform additional construction tasks including concrete work and material spreading.
  • Identify equipment needs and transport gear to job sites as required.
  • Operate road-building equipment and recycling facility machinery (grinders, shredders, screens, crushers).
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment to ensure reliability.
  • Uphold safe work practices and communicate effectively with team members.
  • Supplemental tasks: install barricades, direct traffic, water down streets, and assist as needed.

Job description

Operate medium duty, large stationary, and/or motorized construction and maintenance equipment; perform grading, loading, sweeping, snow plowing, landscaping, water tanker for dust control; street/runway repairs, water and waste water line maintenance activities; may transport equipment on public right-of-ways & City owned facilities and perform semi-skilled maintenance tasks.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essentialfunctions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below. Mustbe able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without areasonable accommodation.

  1. Operate a variety of medium duty, construction and maintenance equipment including, but not limited to; a motor grader, fork lift, front-end loader, water truck, portable chipper, snow plow, de-icer, medium duty bulldozer, single and tandem axle dump truck, tractor mower-spreader-sweeper-scraper, roller, stripping machine, compactor in support of a variety of maintenance and construction operation.
  2. Grade, roads using motor grader; roll asphalt.
  3. Gather and load waste products from job sites onto trucks; transport to appropriate location.
  4. May clean debris from work areas, ditches, culverts and creek beds; bulldoze hill sides and fire trails as required; collect and haul trash, garbage, debris, dirt, sand and gravel.
  5. May perform additional construction and maintenance tasks including concrete work, spreading material, and a variety of minor repair activities.
  6. Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; transport equipment to and from construction sites.
  7. Operate rollers, chip-seal machines, road-grader and various equipment in constructing roads and trails,
  8. Operate a variety of equipment and vehicles used in the disposal division including backhoes, front-end loaders, skid steers, bobcats, tractors, roll-off trucks and a variety of recycling facility equipment, including but not limited to, grinders, shredders, screens, and crushers.
  9. Perform preventive maintenance on equipment as required.
  10. Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures; maintain effective communications with communications tower.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. May install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street-repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites; water down streets and flush drains.
  2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours of vocational training in the maintenance and operation of medium duty motorized gas or diesel powered equipment; and

One (1) year construction equipment operation and maintenance experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
When assigned to the Solid Waste Department:
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B).
  • Possession of a valid City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Possession of a valid OSHA Forklift Operator certification within six (6) months from date of hire.
Environmental:

Construction site environment; exposure to dust, noise, toxic materials; waste and infectious materials; work in inclement weather conditions; work flexible hours, including evening and weekends as required.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for heavy lifting and climbing; and operating motorized equipment and vehicles; work in confined spaces; work at heights; work around heavy construction equipment; travel from site to site.
