Job summary

Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is hiring a Construction Transportation Technician I/II to support highway construction. The role involves inspection, materials testing, and project documentation to ensure safety and adherence to plans.

Position may be filled as Technician I or II; starting at Technician I with progression through UDOT’s Construction Training Program (CTP). The role is field-based and located at Willard Construction, UT, with a 12-month probation and benefits.

Qualifications

• Class A CDL or ability to obtain within 18–24 months via UDOT training.
• Report to Region One within 30-minute response time and be available 24/7 for emergencies.
• Smartphone with data plan provided (UDOT monthly allowance).
• Able to lift at least 50 pounds.
• Commitment to completing required training through TEP.

• Assist with inspection and documentation of UDOT construction projects.
• Perform materials testing to ensure compliance with project specs.
• Monitor contractor work to verify it meets plans and standards.
• Document construction progress using department software systems.

• Willing to work outdoors in varying weather; perform physically demanding tasks.
• After training, assist in roadway maintenance and snow removal during winter.

Construction Transportation Technician I/II - Willard

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is hiring a Construction Transportation Technician to support highway construction projects. In this hands-on role, you will assist with construction inspection, materials testing, and project documentation to help ensure transportation projects are built safely and according to plan.

This position may be filled as a Transportation Technician I or II, depending on qualifications and experience. Most employees start at the Technician I level and advance as they complete training through UDOT’s Construction Transportation Program (CTP).

• Current CDL Holders: Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is required for all commercial driver license and learner permit holders

• Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Transportation Technicians are also trained to assist with roadway maintenance operations when needed. After training, technicians may participate in maintenance activities such as snow removal during winter storms.

Qualifications

• A Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 18-24 months via UDOT-provided training.
• The ability to report to Region One within a 30-minute response time and provide 24-hour availability for emergency response.
• A smartphone with a data plan (UDOT provides a monthly taxable allowance to help cover the cost).
• The ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
• A commitment to completing required training and certifications through the Transportation Technician Education Program (TEP).

Preferred Qualifications

• Materials sampling/testing (soil, concrete, or asphalt)
• Experience with construction logs, blueprints, or project plan reading
• A Class A Commercial Driver's License
• Construction/maintenance experience on highway or roadway projects
• Professional experience operating heavy equipment

Supplemental Information

• Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is required for all commercial driver license and learner permit holders.
• This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing after hire.
• This role requires frequent exposure to live traffic, hazardous weather, and physical exertion (standing, crouching, and lifting) for long periods.
