Job summary

Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) seeks a hands-on Maintenance Transportation Technician I/II to join our Provo/Orem team. You’ll help maintain highways, operate snowplows and other heavy equipment, and document work through our asset-tracking software.

The role offers growth through the Transportation Education Program (TEP) with pay progression. Training, benefits, and on-call opportunities accompany a full-time schedule.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a Class A CDL or obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to report to Provo/Orem station within 30 minutes and be available for 24-hour needs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance on state routes, highways, and drainage features.
  • Operate heavy machinery including snowplows, salt spreaders, and blowers.
  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as loaders, backhoes, and graders.
  • Use department software to track assets and document work by crews and contractors.
  • Manage roadside vegetation using various methods, including herbicide application.
  • Work outdoors in all weather and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Support construction and permit projects; cross-train in inspection and materials testing after ~18 months.

About the Role

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a hard-working, hands-on individual to join our maintenance team. In this role, you will be part of the front-line crew responsible for the upkeep of Utah’s highways, ensuring our infrastructure remains safe for the traveling public in all conditions.

This position may be filled as a Transportation Technician I or II, depending on qualifications and experience. Most employees start at the Technician I level and advance as they complete training through UDOT’s Transportation Education Program (TEP).

Position Information
  • Salary Range:$22.44 - $25.22/hr (Depends on experience)
  • Position Type:Full-Time, Career Service (Schedule B - 12 month probationary period)
  • Work Location:UDOT Provo/Orem Maintenance Station (1839 W Business Park Drive, Orem, UT 84058)
  • Drug Test:Pre-employment and random after hire.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform general maintenance on state routes, highways, and drainage features to ensure infrastructure longevity.
  • Operate heavy machinery - including snowplows, salt spreaders, and blowers - to clear state roadways during winter storms.
  • Operate and perform basic maintenance on heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes, and graders.
  • Utilize department software to track assets and document work performed by both UDOT crews and contractors.
  • Manage roadside vegetation through various methods, including herbicide application.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Maintenance Technicians are also trained to support UDOT’s construction and permit projects. After approximately 18 months, you will have the opportunity to cross-train in construction inspection and materials testing, allowing you to build a versatile career across different department operations.
Requirements for Success
  • A Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 monthsof hire (UDOT provides paid training and testing).
  • The ability to report to the Provo/Orem Maintenance Station within a 30-minute response time and maintain 24-hour availability for operational needs.
  • The ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Maintain a personal smartphone with a data plan (UDOT provides a monthly taxable allowance to help cover the cost).
  • A commitment to completing required training and certifications and continued education through the UDOT TEP program.
Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who possess:

  • A current Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Experience in roadway maintenance and snow removal.
  • Professional work experience operating heavy equipment (loaders, backhoes, etc.).
  • Experience with mechanical maintenance or equipment repair.
  • Familiarity with UDOT maintenance or construction standards.
  • Demonstrated reliability and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Supplemental Information
  • Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouseis required for all commercial driver license and learner permit holders.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing after hire.
  • This role requires frequent exposure to live traffic, hazardous weather, and physical exertion (standing, crouching, and lifting) for long periods.
