Qualifications

About the Role

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a hard-working, hands-on individual to join our maintenance team. In this role, you will be part of the front-line crew responsible for the upkeep of Utah’s highways, ensuring our infrastructure remains safe for the traveling public in all conditions.

This position may be filled as a Transportation Technician I or II, depending on qualifications and experience. Most employees start at the Technician I level and advance as they complete training through UDOT’sTransportation Education Program (TEP).

Position Information

• Salary Range:$22.44 - $25.22/hr (Depends on experience)
• Position Type:Full-Time, Career Service (Schedule B - 12 month probationary period)
• Work Location:UDOT Region Three (658 N 1500 W, Orem, UT 84057)

Key Responsibilities

• Roadway Maintenance: Perform maintenance activities on hard and soft surfaces, including lane leveling, crack sealing, grading, and rebuilding shoulders under supervision.
• Operate Heavy Equipment: Safely operate heavy machinery (front-end loaders, backhoes, graders, and Vactor units) for routine maintenance, and operate snowplows, salt spreaders, and blowers to clear roadways during winter storms.
• Maintain Machinery & Facilities: Perform routine servicing and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment, alongside general trades work across crew projects including welding, plumbing, woodworking, landscaping, and facility maintenance.
• Support Roadside & Infrastructure Operations: Manage roadside vegetation using methods such as herbicide application, and assist with general infrastructure maintenance.
• Asset Tracking & Documentation: Utilize department software to track assets and document field work completed by both UDOT crews and contractors.
• Adaptable Field Performance: Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and complete physically demanding tasks as operational needs dictate.
• Career Development & Cross-Training: Support construction and permit projects, with the opportunity after approximately 18 months to cross-train in construction inspection and materials testing.

Minimum Qualifications

• A Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 monthsof hire (UDOT provides paid training and testing).
• The ability to report to the the Region Three shop within a 30-minute response time and maintain 24-hour availability for operational needs.
• The ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
• Maintain a personal smartphone with a data plan (UDOT provides a monthly taxable allowance to help cover the cost).
• A commitment to completing required training and certifications and continued education through the UDOT TEP program.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who possess:

• A current Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
• Experience in roadway maintenance and snow removal.
• Professional work experience operating heavy equipment (loaders, backhoes, etc.).
• Experience with mechanical maintenance or equipment repair.
• Familiarity with UDOT maintenance or construction standards.
• Demonstrated reliability and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Supplemental Information

• Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouseis required for all commercial driver license and learner permit holders.
• This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing after hire.
• This role requires frequent exposure to live traffic, hazardous weather, and physical exertion (standing, crouching, and lifting) for long periods.
