Construction Project Accountant

Job summary

Gridco, a Birmingham-based utility contractor and engineering services company, is hiring a Staff Accountant. This role supports the monthly close, general ledger accuracy, account reconciliations, and hands-on job cost and WIP accounting in a construction/project-based environment.

You will work with the Accounting Manager and Controller, gaining exposure to AP, Payroll, AR/Billing, and financial reporting, with opportunities to grow as Gridco scales.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 3-5 years of accounting experience (public accounting or industry); construction, utility, or project-based industry a plus.
• Working knowledge of GAAP.
• Experience with ERP systems (Viewpoint Vista, Sage, SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Dynamics) preferred.
• High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• General ledger & journal entries — Prepare and post journal entries, maintain schedules, ensure COA accuracy.
• Month-end close support — Assist with monthly close checklist, accruals, reconciliations, and close package.
• Bank & balance sheet reconciliations — Reconcile bank accounts and credit cards; resolve discrepancies.
• Job cost & WIP support — Review job cost coding and WIP schedule updates with PMs.
• Fixed assets — Maintain asset ledger, record additions/disposals, calculate depreciation.
• AP & payroll coordination — Coordinate GL coding with AP and Payroll teams.
