Construction Manager (Anchorage, AK)
STG Inc is a proudly owned subsidiary of Calista Brice, operating across Alaska’s most challenging environments. As Construction Manager you will lead on‑site project activities, ensuring safe, efficient delivery of critical infrastructure and community services.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee pre‑planning, field operations, and project execution for assigned construction projects across Alaska.
- Manage site safety, field productivity, scheduling, quality control, subcontractor performance, and resource coordination to keep projects on schedule, on budget, and in compliance with contract documents.
- Work closely with the Project Manager to support planning, reporting, and client communication while acting as the primary field leader for daily operations.
- Coordinate project activities including estimating, bidding, scheduling, reporting, and client interface.
- Develop proposals, work plans, and schedules for bids/estimates.
- Prepare and monitor RFIs, design clarifications, permits, and project documentation.
- Support the Project Manager with planning, scheduling, and workflow management for assigned projects.
- Oversee all field activities—labor assignments, contractor coordination, equipment use, and material delivery—to ensure alignment with drawings, specifications, and safety requirements.
- Perform jobsite visits to monitor progress, address issues, and support field personnel.
- Provide hands‑on construction expertise to assist other trades when needed.
- Determine labor requirements and oversee subcontractor performance.
- Coordinate procurement, delivery, and allocation of materials, equipment, and tools.
- Review and code timesheets and other project‑related documentation.
- Prepare progress reports summarizing materials used, schedule adjustments, and milestones.
- Monitor field costs, quantities, and productivity to support budget adherence and identify variances or risks.
- Identify, document, and support pricing of scope changes, field directives, and change orders.
- Lead field quality control activities, including inspections, punch lists, corrective actions, and acceptance readiness.
- Support the company’s Health and Safety Program, model safety‑first behavior, and respond to safety audits, observations, and compliance needs; suspend work as necessary.
- Collaborate with Risk Management to resolve safety disputes and ensure safety equipment is available and used appropriately.
- Serve as the initial point of contact for employee safety concerns, reporting incidents and conditions that impact safety, ethics, or profitability.
- Supervise field crew and subcontractors in coordination with the project Foreman.
- Plan crew mobilization, rotation, housing, and logistics for remote or camp‑based project assignments.
- Maintain positive relationships with local community representatives and authorities.
- Represent STG in the field with owners, engineers, and stakeholders during site visits, inspections, and meetings.
- Communicate regularly with internal departments and project teams.
- Support workforce development through coaching, performance feedback, and mentoring of field supervisors and crews.
- Maintain punctual attendance and required certifications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of commercial and civil construction methods, field operations, sequencing, and project lifecycle management (estimating, procurement, scheduling, execution, and closeout).
- Strong understanding of construction contract documents—drawings, specifications, scopes of work, subcontracts, change orders, and general conditions.
- Familiarity with federal, state, and local construction regulations, permitting processes, and compliance standards applicable to Alaska projects.
- Proficiency in safety regulations and best practices, including OSHA requirements, hazard identification, job hazard analysis (JHA), incident reporting, and corrective action procedures.
- Knowledge of budgeting principles, cost control methodologies, earned value concepts, and financial tracking related to labor, equipment, materials, and subcontracted work.
- Understanding of construction quality management practices, inspection processes, testing requirements, and documentation necessary for contract compliance and acceptance.
- Knowledge of environmental protection requirements and cultural or land‑use considerations in Alaska, including work in sensitive or regulated areas.
- Skill in developing, reviewing, and managing project schedules using scheduling software (including Microsoft Project) and coordinating sequencing across trades and subcontractors.
- Experience preparing and evaluating bid packages, change requests, and procurement documentation.
- Ability to review, code, and approve invoices, timesheets, and expense documentation to ensure alignment with budgets and contract obligations.
- Competency in documenting field conditions, delays, disruptions, and impacts to support change management, claims avoidance, and dispute resolution.
- Capability to supervise, mentor, and direct field personnel—assigning work, monitoring productivity, providing feedback, and supporting workforce development.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing progress reports, presenting updates to leadership and clients, and documenting field conditions accurately.
- Skill in negotiating with subcontractors, vendors, regulatory agencies, and community representatives while maintaining professional relationships.
- Capacity to exercise sound judgment and make timely decisions in dynamic, high‑pressure field environments with competing priorities.
- Ability to identify project risks related to safety, logistics, schedule, weather, or resource constraints and implement mitigation strategies.
- Skill in coordinating logistics and material delivery in remote or rural Alaska environments (transportation, staging, infrastructure).
- Ability to manage or coordinate multiple concurrent projects, crews, or work fronts while maintaining schedule, quality, and safety standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and project management software; ability to learn and apply specialized construction management and estimating platforms such as HCCS HeavyBid.
- Demonstrated ethical leadership, confidentiality, professionalism, and integrity in representing the organization.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and efficiently.
- Willingness to travel to rural project locations (up to 40%) and work in varied indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to weather, construction noise, and active jobsite conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field; or a relevant combination of education, technical training, and progressively responsible construction field leadership experience.
- Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible leadership experience in the construction industry (e.g., Superintendent, Project Manager, Construction Supervisor, or equivalent).
- Demonstrated experience overseeing field crews and/or subcontractors on active construction projects.
- Knowledge of construction sequencing, Alaska field practices, and subcontractor coordination.
- Valid state driver’s license and qualification to operate a vehicle under the company’s driving policy.
- Ability to pass drug, driving, and background screenings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of Alaska rural construction, logistics, and remote project execution strongly preferred.
- Experience with or knowledge of HCCS HeavyBid software preferred.
Working Environment
Work may alternate between a fast‑paced office environment and on‑site job sites—both indoor and outdoor—within Anchorage and remote Alaska locations. The role requires efficient multitasking, collaborative teamwork, and a proactive safety mindset.
