Job description

Job Summary

Project Engineer – based in Anchorage, AK. Responsible for planning, managing and coordinating small‑to‑mid‑scale construction projects (<$1million, 6–18months) across Alaska, ensuring on‑time, on‑budget delivery in accordance with contract documents.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate all project activities: estimating, bidding, client interface, timelines and day‑to‑day oversight.
  • Develop proposals, cost estimates and bids.
  • Manage submittal and approval processes; prepare change requests.
  • Monitor and review plans, permits, RFIs, design changes and variance requests.
  • Procure and schedule materials, equipment, team members and subcontractors.
  • Determine labor requirements and source of construction materials.
  • Oversee delivery of materials, tools and equipment.
  • Ensure efficient use of project resources and maintain accuracy of drawings, specifications, schedule, environmental requirements and quality expectations.
  • Communicate with field crews on technical questions, DCVRs, RFIs and any work changes.
  • Track time and expenses against budget; prepare progress reports.
  • Oversee documentation and retention of contracts, commissioning, completion reports, as‑built documents and project close‑out.
  • Supervise support staff and laborers on site; no direct supervisory duties.
  • Perform physical labor (climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, handling materials in extreme Alaskan conditions).
  • Support STG’s Health and Safety Program; conduct on‑site safety audits and modify work practices as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with co‑workers as a team player.
  • Assist Project Managers with related tasks; seek and participate in training opportunities.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1+ year of engineering or construction related project experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and project management software.
  • Valid state driver’s license; ability to drive under STG’s Driving Policy.
  • Ability to pass drug, driving record and background screening.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction (may be substituted by one year of related experience).
  • Prior experience in Alaska’s rural construction industry.
  • Familiarity with HCCS “HeavyBid” software.
  • Knowledge of remote Alaska logistics and construction practices.

  • Technical knowledge of field construction concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of construction, architecture and building industry standard operating practices.
  • Knowledge of procurement rules, revenue models, project ledger and cost‑to‑completion projections.
  • Strong organizational skills, resource planning, priority setting and deadline management.
  • Effective written, graphical and verbal communication; presentations and negotiation.
  • Analytical and forecasting skills, ability to draw conclusions and justify decisions.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and explain construction plans, drawings and specifications.
  • Competency in Microsoft Project, Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Ability to prepare accurate budgets and cost estimates.
  • Ability to interpret complex contract documents, compile data and prepare reports.
  • Basic mathematical skills, problem‑solving and resourcefulness.
  • Strong self‑motivation and the ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with crews, customers and vendors; strong follow‑up skills.
  • Ability to work productively under pressure; active listening and high‑quality customer service.
  • Ethical business conduct and compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Travel up to 30% of the time in Alaska.
