Job description

RK&K's Construction Engineering Inspection and Construction Management Division is hiring entry to mid-level Construction Inspectors in and around the Salem, VA area. This role will primarily perform work in VDOT's Salem District, including projects along the I-81 corridor and localities such as Roanoke, Bedford, Martinsville, Christiansburg, and Hillsville. As a Construction Inspector with RK&K, you will apply your knowledge of construction, safety, quality, and materials to provide critical inspection services on heavy civil construction sites, including highway, bridge, and design-build/design-bid-build projects. Essential Functions

• Provide construction management support, including inspection and monitoring of construction of roadway and structures to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and safety regulations
• Engage in solving complex problems to provide technical evaluation and sound solutions
• Monitor and document contractor activities; communicate and document non-compliant work elements
• Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment
• Review placement of materials and conduct materials testing as required
• Communicate effectively across platforms with project management, clients, stakeholders, and contractors
• Interface with clients, state and federal agencies, and other engineering disciplines on construction projects
• Perform field measurements and track daily quantities of work items installed
• Maintain comprehensive project records and reporting as required

Required Skills and Experience

• Three (3) years of relevant experience in materials, standards, and specifications related to state highway projects and facilities
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to compute basic mathematical formulas including algebra and geometry
• Proficient in computer software including Microsoft Office and other construction documentation software
• Ability to work independently on small construction projects
• Acceptable driving record
• High School Diploma or GED

Certifications Required

• VDOT Required Material Certifications (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
• Certifications include NICET Level II in Soil and Aggregate Compaction, VDOT Asphalt Field Level I & II, ACI Concrete Field Level I or equivalent, among others listed.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Experience in construction inspection, including roadway, asphalt, concrete, pavement markings, and bridge construction methods
• Experience with VDOT and other public agencies
• Experience with design-build construction materials testing and inspection
• Familiarity with construction document management software such as PlanGrid, AWP, and SharePoint
• Associate or bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field
