Duties, Responsibilities & Other
  • This is an entry/apprentice level position to perform quality control of VDOT Roadway and Bridges construction for field soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate testing of contractors' work to ensure contract compliance for routine activities of non-complexity, under the direction of a Construction Quality Control Inspector or Manager.
  • Upon successful demonstration of required skills and aptitude, candidates will be eligible for more senior positions.
  • Performs materials testing such as nuclear gauge soil and aggregate density.
  • Reviews placement of and performs materials tests on concrete deliveries in accordance with VDOT and ACI standards. Make cylinders for delivery to labs.
  • Verifies construction of roadway and highway materials and placement to be in compliance with drawings, VDOT specifications, standards, special provisions, and contract documents.
  • With appropriate training and oversight, monitors and observes limited contractual fieldwork, including excavations, storm drain piping installation, drainage facilities, concrete placement, soil and aggregate placement, road surfaces, pile driving while under supervision of a more experienced inspector.
  • Advises inspector supervisors and contractor supervisors/foremen of non-conforming field tests.
  • Takes field measurements of materials placed/tested and records daily production and test results.
  • Completes daily reports with attached VDOT materials testing forms.
  • Receives materials delivery tickets for compliance and submits to contractor.
  • Works under the direction of Quality Control Lead Management and Senior Inspectors.
  • Work may be near active highways, roadways, water/land bridges, marine barges, watercraft, underground tunnel boring machines, and construction sites. Night shifts may be required on a rotational basis.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma; an Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology or related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years of experience required.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is required; background and motor vehicle checks may be conducted based on the position.
Performance Expectations
  • Accurately records and reports daily forms as per project requirements.
  • Communicates effectively with clients, contractors, staff, and supervisors.
  • Proactively resolves problems at the lowest level.
  • Adheres to project scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Reviews all work for completeness and accuracy before submission.
  • Submits accurate timesheets, mileage, and expense reports weekly.
  • Reviews jobsite safety daily and documents issues promptly.
  • Follows OSHA Safety Standards and company policies at all times.
  • Maintains necessary certifications and participates in training.
  • Performs all tasks according to industry standards and client requirements.
