Job description

RK&K's Construction Engineering Inspection and Construction Management Division is hiring entry to mid-level Construction Inspectors in and around the Salem, VA area.

This role will primarily involve work in VDOT's Salem District, including projects along the I-81 corridor and localities such as Roanoke, Bedford, Martinsville, Christiansburg, and Hillsville. As a Construction Inspector with RK&K, you will apply your knowledge of construction, safety, quality, and materials to provide critical inspection services on heavy civil construction sites, including highway, bridge, and design-build/design-bid-build projects. There are opportunities for growth and training into team leadership, construction management, and office engineering careers.

Essential Functions

1. Provide construction management support, including inspection and monitoring of roadway and structures construction to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and safety regulations.
2. Engage in solving complex problems to provide technical evaluation and sound solutions.
3. Monitor and document contractors' activities, and communicate non-compliant work elements.
4. Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using survey and field engineering equipment.
5. Review material placement and conduct materials testing as required.
6. Communicate effectively across different platforms with project management, clients, stakeholders, and contractors.
7. Interface with clients, state and federal agencies, and other engineering disciplines on construction projects.
8. Perform field measurements and track daily quantities of work items installed.
9. Maintain comprehensive project records and reporting as required.

Required Skills and Experience

1. Three years of relevant experience in materials, standards, and specifications related to state highway projects and facilities.
2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
3. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including algebra and geometry.
4. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other construction documentation software.
5. Ability to work independently on small construction projects.
6. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
7. High School Diploma or GED.

Certifications Required

• VDOT Material Certifications (or ability to obtain within 6 months), including NICET Level II Soil and Aggregate, VDOT Asphalt Field Levels I & II, ACI Concrete Field Level I or equivalent, and others listed.
• Additional certifications such as VA DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection, Stormwater Management, Nuclear Gauge Safety, Work Zone Traffic Control, OSHA Safety Training, etc.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Experience with roadway, asphalt, concrete, pavement markings, and bridge construction methods.
• Experience with VDOT and other public agencies.
• Experience with design-build construction materials testing/inspection.
• Familiarity with construction document management software like PlanGrid, AWP, SharePoint.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
