Job summary

BNSF Railway is seeking a Conductor Trainee for Birmingham, AL to learn train operations and safety procedures. The role involves on-the-job and classroom training, with a 19-week program at BNSF’s training center in Overland Park, KS, and a three-year recall obligation to the Primary location.

The position is full-time (40 hours/week), may require 24/7 on-call coverage, nights, weekends, and holidays, and frequent travel within the seniority region. Strong safety awareness is essential.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
• Ability to lift up to 80 pounds.
• Willingness to work in shift work and travel as needed.
• Capable of climbing ladders and working around equipment.

Responsibilities

• Communication responsibilities: receive and act on information using various devices and monitor daily work.
• Switching functions: operate track switches and derails and verify alignment.
• Train and equipment inspections: inspect cars, determine train makeup and report conditions.
• Daily work is in a safety sensitive environment with varied and extreme weather conditions.
