Job summary

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Computational Mechanics Engineer to solve impactful problems by modeling a broad range of physical processes in complex systems. You will contribute to projects supporting government agencies and work with analysts, designers, and fabricators to bring models to real-world systems.

You will build and validate models for static and dynamic events, utilize multiple advanced tools, and communicate results through reports and presentations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Materials Science, or equivalent with demonstrated application of knowledge.
  • 1+ years demonstrated experience in FEA or related computational modeling.
  • Interest in military projects that include energetics, munitions, blast, and impact.
  • Scientific/engineering programming experience, with the ability to work in MATLAB, C/C++, Python, FORTRAN, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to multi-task on projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally to attend meetings or tests at other government and contractor sites.
  • Ability to work in closed area facilities.
  • Need to obtain Secret level security clearance (U.S. citizenship).

Responsibilities

  • Build models to simulate a broad range of static and dynamic events (blast, impact, penetration, structural strength, fluid dynamics, and more).
  • Select from and leverage advanced software tools to provide the best solution.
  • Collaborate regularly with engineers, designers, fabricators, and scientists.
  • Propose future projects and initiatives with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Craft reports and give presentations to communicate results to team members and government partners.
