Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is seeking a Computational Mechanics Engineer to model static and dynamic events across a broad range of systems. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to apply advanced software tools to challenging problems in defense-related programs.

The role emphasizes developing deep expertise in multiscale modeling, collaborating with engineers and scientists, and communicating results through reports and presentations to partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related engineering/physics field with demonstrated application of knowledge.
  • 1+ years demonstrated experience in FEA or related computational modeling.
  • Interest in military projects including energetics, munitions, blast, and impact.
  • Scientific/engineering programming in MATLAB, C/C++, Python, FORTRAN, or similar.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to multi-task on projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to meet with sites.
  • Ability to work in closed area facilities and obtain a Secret clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Build models to simulate static and dynamic events such as blast, impact, penetration, structural strength, and fluids.
  • Select from and apply a range of advanced software tools to solve problems.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, fabricators and scientists.
  • Propose future projects and initiatives with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Craft reports and present results to team members and government partners.
