Job summary

Stantec’s Buildings team seeks a Computational Designer to advance design computing, automation, and BIM integration across architecture, engineering, and digital delivery. You’ll collaborate with senior designers to identify automation opportunities, prototype workflows, and transition successful concepts into scalable firmwide tools.

Qualifications

  • Advanced expertise in Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit, Dynamo, Rhino.Inside.Revit, Speckle, the Revit API, and custom computational design components.
  • Experience with BIM-integrated computational workflows and project-ready automation.
  • Professional experience applying computational design on data centers, industrial facilities, mission critical projects, or similar complex technical building projects.
  • Proficiency in scripting or programming (Python, C#, JavaScript) with focus on reliability and maintainability.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools to prototype, debug, or extend computational design workflows.
  • Ability to translate architectural/electrical/mechanical requirements into computational frameworks.
  • Familiarity with systems coordination, repeatable planning modules, and fast-track delivery environments.
  • Engineering background or collaboration with engineering teams is a strong plus.
  • Background in systems thinking or workflow standardization for multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience mentoring designers, engineers, or project teams in computational design methods.
  • Ability to define success criteria and track KPIs.

Responsibilities

  • Apply computational design methods to complex building projects (data centers, etc.).
  • Develop parametric and data-driven workflows linking geometry, program, and criteria.
  • Support early design exploration and option studies.
  • Coordinate across architecture, electrical, mechanical, structural, and digital delivery teams.
  • Translate project challenges into reusable automation patterns for future projects.
  • Identify high-value automation opportunities through team discussions.
  • Build in Revit-based automations using Dynamo, Rhino.Inside.Revit, Grasshopper, Python, or C#.
  • Automate design, QA/QC, documentation, modeling, and data tasks for speed and coordination.
  • Test proofs of concept against real project needs and conditions.
  • Transition prototypes into scalable BIM-integrated tools firmwide.
  • Balance innovation with reliability and ensure maintainability.
