Harford Mutual Insurance Group is seeking a Complex Claims Specialist to oversee highly complex auto claims and large exposures. The role requires deep experience in claims handling, negotiation, and strategic guidance on coverage issues.

This is a remote/hybrid position based out of Bel Air, MD, with travel up to 25%. The candidate should have a four-year degree (JD a plus) and substantial industry experience (12+ years), plus CPCU/AIC/SCLA or equivalent certification.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent required; JD preferred.
• Minimum 12 years of industry experience.
• Completion CPCU, AIC, SCLA or equivalent desirable.
• Knowledge and understanding of the litigation process and insurance coverage.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical oversight of complex auto claims with significant severity potential.
• Direct handling of complex claims typically exceeding $250,000 and complex coverage claims.
• Coordinate claim file reviews with insureds and agents; mentor staff on complex claims.
• Communicate feedback to claims staff and management regarding complex claims.
• Maintain records of lawsuits and ensure defense counsel adherence to procedures.
• Participate in exposure analysis and strategy development; implement dispute mechanisms.
• Develop and implement litigation expense reduction methods and monitor open lawsuits.
• Attend trials and settlement conferences; negotiate settlements; conduct field investigations as needed.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

The Complex Claims Specialist exercises independent judgment and discretion in the investigation, evaluation, negotiation, and resolution of highly complex, high-severity commercial casualty claims. The role serves as a technical resource to the claims organization, providing oversight, guidance, and strategic direction on significant exposure claims involving litigation, catastrophic injuries, complex coverage issues, and large financial exposures.

LOCATION:

Remote/Hybrid (Bel Air, MD office)

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

• Provide technical oversight of complex auto claims, including the identification and evaluation of commercial auto claims with significant severity potential.
• Direct claim handling of complex claims, typically in excess of $250,000, & handling of complex coverage claims.
• Actively coordinate claim file reviews with insured and agent.
• Provide mentorship and guidance to claims staff on complex casualty claims.
• Provide constant communication and feedback to claims staff and management regarding complex claims.
• Maintain lawsuit record keeping & monitor defense counsel adherence to litigation procedures.
• Participates in complex exposure analysis and strategies.
• Devise and implement Alternative Dispute Mechanisms.
• Develop and implement litigation expense reduction methods.
• Reduce and monitor number of open lawsuits.
• Attend trials, settlement conferences and other discovery processes, as well as negotiate settlements.
• Perform field investigation where necessary.
• Review and establish appropriate reserves.
• Provide necessary information to reinsurers and affiliates.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

• Minimum four-year degree or comparable work experience; JD is a plus
• Minimum of 12 years’ industry experience
• Completion CPCU, AIC, SCLA or equivalent
• Knowledge and understanding of litigation process.
• Ability to understand and analyze insurance coverage
