Job summary

Petco Animal Supplies Stores, Inc. is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support Vetco Total Care hospital patients and provide outstanding customer care to pet owners.

You will assist doctors with exams, procedures, and anesthesia, while maintaining EMRs and ensuring patient comfort. Ideal candidates have 1+ year in animal care, excellent communication, and a compassionate demeanor for handling stressful situations.

Qualifications

• Preferred to have at least 1-year previous experience working in veterinary practice or sufficient relatable animal care experience to ensure excellent performance at the above-listed skills.
• Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Must be compassionate and sympathetic, and be able to maintain a professional attitude and demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.
• Must have telephone and computer skills.
• Must be a team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas, and accept change.

Responsibilities

• Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments and escort them into an exam room; record vital signs and update EMR.
• Assist doctors with routine and emergency appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision.
• Perform patient restraint, collect specimens, handle and dispense medications per veterinarian directions.
• Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results, and maintain records.
• Prepare patients for surgical/dental procedures and assist with anesthesia and recovery.
• Support in-hospital treatments including injections, fluids, and basic care.
• Assist in training new staff and share knowledge as required.
• Maintain neat hospital environment and schedule-based maintenance.
