Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician I for the Med Surg Unit in Massachusetts. This non‑exempt role supports nurses with direct patient care, observation, and basic procedures.

The position includes 40‑hour weeks with evenings and alternating weekends, and a signing bonus may be available. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED, BLS certification within 30 days, English proficiency, and basic computer and medical terminology knowledge.

Qualifications

• Minimum high school education or GED.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or certification within 30 days.
• Proven PCT I level experience (800 hours and 6 months) or 6 months direct patient care.
• Clear and concise English communication.
• Basic medical terminology knowledge.
• Basic computer skills.
• Strong interpersonal and problem‑solving abilities; remain calm under stress.

Responsibilities

• Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding patient observations.
• Maintains constant observation of high‑risk patients as assigned.
• Contributes to a safe environment and uses de‑escalation techniques as directed.
• Assists with activities of daily living and mobility.
• Assists in moving and positioning patients using proper safety techniques.
• Performs patient safety checks and adheres to restraint policies when needed.
• Records vital signs and anthropometric measurements.
• Performs EKGs, POC tests, and collects specimens for lab transport.
• Supports unit procedures, equipment checks, and supply storage.
• Assists in treatments and procedures with setup, positioning, and cleanup.
