Job summary

Indiana University Health System is seeking a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) to work under the direction of a registered nurse (RN). The PCA will provide care to designated patients, assist with activities of daily living, mobility, and continuous observation including suicide prevention.

The role requires current BLS certification or completion of the IU Health PCA education program, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a high-stress environment with attention to detail.

Qualifications

• Requires current BLS certification or completion of IU Health PCA education program.
• Knowledge of patient care appropriate to age and developmental level.
• Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
• Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to withstand high levels of tension and stress.
• Ability to maintain concentration amid interruptions and noise.
• Judgment and initiative in resolving problems.
• Ability to prioritize and manage a high workload in a limited time.
• Knowledge of procedures, equipment, software and standards related to non-licensed patient care activities.
• Knowledge of infection control principles.
• Ability to perform physically demanding, repetitive movements.
• Ability to read and perform basic math.
• Ability to organize tasks and attend to details.
• Knowledge of good personal hygiene and aseptic techniques.

Responsibilities

• Provide activities of daily living for designated patients.
• Assist with mobility and transfers as directed by RN.
• Maintain continuous observation including suicide prevention as required.
• Keep patient surroundings clean and orderly.
• Support patient care team in the non-licensed role.
