Job summary

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is seeking an Animal Control Intake and Dispatch Services specialist in Birmingham, AL. The role supports the Director and Assistant Director, dispatches field staff, handles public inquiries, and maintains intake records for shelter operations.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, at least one year of customer service, basic animal welfare knowledge, and strong communication skills.

• Previous dispatch and animal handling experience preferred.
• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Minimum one-year customer service experience.
• Basic understanding of animal welfare.
• Intermediate computer skills and data entry ability.
• Skilled in effective communication with the public.
• Ability to collect information clearly in emergencies.
• Ability to operate two-way radio and multi-line phone systems.
• Ability to read and interpret maps and directions for locating service requests.
• Ability to prioritize service requests including emergencies for efficient service.
• Knowledge of standard office procedures.
• Knowledge of animal control operations, regulations and state law.
• Meets GBHS employment requirements as per employee handbook.
• Ability to communicate with the public, volunteers, and staff in a courteous manner.
• Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

• Answers calls on a multi-line system and records incident details and owner licensing information.
• Prioritizes and assigns officer response; dispatches service and maintains logs.
• Manages daily intake functions for animals with various behaviors.
• Performs secretarial and receptionist duties including document handling and mailing.
• Updates field records and generates letters for owners and certified mail.
• Operates two-way radio, phone system and office equipment.
• Cleans public shelter areas such as lobby and kennels.
• Provides prompt customer service to guests seeking lost pets.
• Receives payment for services and reconciles daily logs.
• Provides backup support to animal control, intake, impoundment, clinic, and care teams.
• Ensures accurate animal intake data and notes.
• Keeps up with industry standards and shares information with GBHS staff and volunteers.
