Job summary

Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) is a progressive animal welfare shelter dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming homeless animals. The Animal Care Specialist is responsible for providing proper care to dogs, cats, and other animals at the shelter, working with veterinarians and volunteers to maintain welfare standards.

The role requires teamwork, strong communication, and a compassionate approach to all animals and adopters.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Experience with animals in shelter, veterinary, or boarding setting preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
• Working weekends may be required.

Responsibilities

• Performs cleaning duties as directed by supervisor and welfare standards.
• Feeds, cleans, and exercises animals, including walking, bathing, and monitoring behavior.
• Assists with loading/unloading of animals for transport.
• Maintains cleanliness and stock of crates, equipment, and animal areas.
• Documents behavioral and medical observations for management.
