The City of Anaheim seeks a dynamic Community Services Coordinator to support youth development through research, program design, and outreach for Junior High and High School youth and their families in Anaheim.
Project S.A.Y. provides a range of services including outreach, counseling, education, and leadership development, with no cost to participants. A flexible schedule with some evenings and weekends is required, and bilingual Spanish is highly desirable.
The City of Anaheim Community Services Department seeks a highly dynamic Community Services Coordinator to support the City's youth development efforts. The Community Services Coordinator will research, develop, and conduct youth development and outreach services to junior high and high school age youth and their families living in "at risk" environments.
Project S.A.Y. (Support Anaheim's Youth) is the City of Anaheim's Youth Development Program. Project S.A.Y. serves Junior High and High School age youth and their families living in Anaheim and uses a combination of Youth Outreach, Case Management, School Interventions, Assistance to Parents, Community Education, Youth Leadership Development, Health and Fitness, and Education and Employment to engage youth in positive and constructive activities to promote the healthy development of young people.
Youth meet individually or in small groups with a Community Services Coordinator to resolve conflict and problem solve issues of importance in a young person's life. Youth participate in a wide range of social, recreational, and educational activities that help them develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for successful adulthood. Participants develop leadership, conflict resolution, problem solving, and goal-setting skills. Youth help plan their own activities such as sporting events, camping trips, leadership development programs, and service projects in the community. Project S.A.Y. services are offered at no cost to Junior High and High school age youth.
Bilingual proficiency (read/speak/write) in Spanish is highly desirable.
This position requires a flexible work schedule which includes some evening and weekend shifts.
Candidates must possess responsible experience Youth Development, Social Work, Community Services, and/or Counseling. Ideal candidates will possess at least 2 to 3 years of Youth Development related experience in an "at risk" setting. A Bachelor's Degree in the area of Youth Development, Human Services, Social Work, or Counseling is highly desired.
Principles and premises of a broad Youth Development Framework including youth Competency Areas and Developmental Assets; current research and practices in the areas of resiliency research, creating environments of positive support, and developing capable young people; youth program coordination; leadership and character development programs for youth; and challenges and obstacles facing youth living in "at-risk" environments; college/university and other higher educational processes including enrollment and admissions and how youth may access those opportunities; City, department, division policies and procedures; application of policies and procedures within assigned area; methods and techniques used in marketing and promotion; modern office procedures; field-related software applications; procedures and techniques of budgeting; business letter writing and basic report preparation; principles and procedures of record keeping and data collection.
Maintain effective interpersonal communication skills; plan, organize and prioritize tasks; lead, motivate and guide youth participants; prepare and administer a budget; train staff and volunteers; communicate effectively with participants and their families, school administrators, law enforcement personnel, social service agencies, religious community, supervisors, and members of the public; maintain effective communication in hostile environments; use effective conflict resolution and mediation techniques; develop program procedures and operating instructions for volunteers and participants; attend pertinent training and develop training for co-workers.
Possess a valid driver's license by date of appointment. Position requires maintaining current CPR and First Aid certificates.
Due to the nature of work assignments, the incumbent typically works in an office environment. However, some assignments may require the incumbent to visit outdoor or indoor field work sites to accomplish tasks.
Due to the nature of work assignments, the incumbent must have the ability to speak clearly; hear conversation in person, over the telephone; vision to read written and typed materials; have manual dexterity to operate a variety of office equipment and a computer keyboard; and lift and carry items weighing up to 15 pounds.
