Houston Public Works-Houston Permitting Center is looking for a Community Service Inspector within the Community Code Enforcement Division (CCE). CCE works to improve quality of life in Houston neighborhoods by reducing blight and substandard living conditions through city code inspections and enforcement. CCE administers the city's dangerous building demolitions and public hearings. In addition, CCE conducts residential property code inspections and enforcement addressing the following issues:
The Community Service Inspector position performs inspections, enforcement of codes, ordinances and regulations. The candidate will have excellent communication and effective problem-solving skills to provide general information and customer assistance. Must be friendly, professional, and attentive to the needs of both external and internal customers and provide resolution to customer concerns and/or questions. Maintain a positive and proactive approach to the guidelines and Division goals. Will collect data and requests from field investigations to process. Prepares written records of proceedings and well as original correspondence to customers. May perform other duties as assigned.
This position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires a high school diploma or a GED certificate and up to eighteen months of specialized education or training in a specific area or trade.
One year of experience related to customer service or an area of inspection to be performed is required. Depending on the area of specialty, the position may require the experience listed above to be journey level, received after completion of an apprenticeship program.
Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. (AP 2-2).
SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED: None. However, the Department may administer a skill assessment evaluation.
SAFETY IMPACT POSITION: Yes. If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
