Essie Justice Group in Los Angeles is seeking a Community Organizer to help recruit and engage members, support their leadership development, and implement campaigns to challenge mass incarceration through a Black feminist lens.

The role involves assisting with direct actions, canvassing, and coordinating meetings with allies and elected officials, while tracking participation and outcomes. This full-time position emphasizes care, equity, and community safety.

Qualifications

• 2-3 years of organizing experience in community-based, issue-based, electoral, or labor contexts.
• Commitment to leadership of women and gender expansive people with incarcerated loved ones.
• Excellent time-management, organizational, and event-planning skills.
• Effective writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
• Collaborative team player capable of handling multiple projects in a fast-paced setting.
• Proficiency with Mac OS, Google Suite, and MS Office.
• Strong commitment to progressive politics, gender justice, race justice, and ending mass incarceration.

Responsibilities

• Recruit and retain members, maintaining an engaged, welcoming community.
• Organize meetings and events, tracking participation and turnout goals.
• Support leadership development through committee participation and opportunities.
• Assist with campaign activities, including canvassing and phone banking.
• Produce member- and partner-facing communications and maintain relationships with allies.
