Job summary

Essie Justice Group in Los Angeles is seeking a Community Organizer to help grow membership and leadership among women and gender-expansive people with incarcerated loved ones. You will support day-to-day campaigns, organize events, and assist with outreach to elected officials and allies.

The role is full-time and based in Essie’s Los Angeles office, offering medical/dental/vision benefits, a 401(k) option, generous vacation, and a wellness stipend.

Qualifications

• 2–3 years of organizing experience (community-based, issue-based, electoral, and/or labor).
• Commitment to leadership development for women and gender expansive people with incarcerated loved ones and families.
• Excellent time-management, organizational, and event-planning skills.
• Strong written, edited, and verbal communication abilities.
• Comfortable in a fast-paced, non-traditional work environment with multi-project accountability.
• Proficiency with Mac OS, Google Suite, and MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Assist in recruiting new members and stewarding participation in Essie’s programming and campaigns.
• Help monitor member retention trends and suggest strategies to improve engagement.
• Support leadership development by guiding members into committee participation and opportunities.
• Organize meetings and events that are engaging, inclusive, and aligned with Essie’s values.
• Assist with campaign tactics and outreach, including canvassing and phone banking.
• Produce member- and partner-facing communications and materials.
• Maintain relationships with community allies and partners.
