Job summary

St. Anthony’s Dining Room is seeking a Kitchen Assistant to help with daily meal prep and maintain kitchen cleanliness. You will follow safety standards and assist with food preparation and dishroom operations in a fast-paced environment.

The role requires teamwork, reliability, and the ability to work non-traditional hours including weekends. Prior non-profit experience and California Food Handler training are a plus; the organization emphasizes compassion and service values.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of safe, sanitary food handling procedures.
• Excellent interpersonal, listening, oral, and written communication skills.
• Ability to be polite, diplomatic, and firm.
• Ability to respond to emergencies and high-pressure situations in a self-composed and self-assured manner.
• Ability to work non-traditional hours and days (weekends and holidays required).
• Ability to complete paperwork neatly and legibly.
• Ability or willingness to learn to use information and communication technologies.
• Ability to be punctual, reliable, cooperative, and stay team-oriented.
• Experience working in a non-profit or community-based social service agency with people experiencing homelessness or poverty preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist with all aspects of the daily meal preparation for Dining Room guests.
• Ensure food is prepared according to safe and healthy food safety standards.
• Maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen and food prep areas.
• Cook menu items in cooperation with the kitchen staff.
• Operate the industrial dishwasher for cleaning of equipment.
• Wash pots, pans, dishes, and utensils; maintain hygiene standards.
• Assist in sorting and organizing cleaned items for smooth workflow.
• Maintain a safe kitchen environment and identify hazards.
• Monitor equipment malfunctions and report to supervisor.
• Enter data and complete paperwork neatly and legibly.
• Follow organizational programs, policies, and procedures.
• Participate in regular training to improve daily workflows.
