Community Education Instructor – Enrichment and Recreation

Department: Cloquet Community Education

Reports to: Enrichment and Recreation Coordinator

General Description:

Provide quality instruction, coaching, and leadership for Community Education enrichment and recreation programs. Instructors may propose and teach a variety of classes, activities, clubs, leagues, camps, workshops, or recreational programs based on their knowledge, experience, interests, and the needs of the Cloquet community.

The instructor is responsible for planning and delivering a safe, positive, and engaging experience for participants. Depending on the program, responsibilities may include teaching an enrichment class, leading a recreational activity, coaching a sport, or facilitating a club, league, camp, or other Community Education offering.

Instructors work cooperatively with Community Education staff and follow all Cloquet Public Schools, Community Education, and facility policies and procedures.

Education/Licensure Needed:

Education, training, certification, licensure, or relevant experience appropriate to the class, activity, or sport being taught or coached.

Job Qualifications:

• Knowledge, experience, training, or demonstrated skill in the area being taught or coached.
• Experience working with children, youth, adults, or community groups, as appropriate to the program.
• Ability to provide a positive, inclusive, and welcoming environment for participants.
• Excellent communication and customer relation skills.
• Ability to organize, plan, and effectively deliver instruction or coaching.
• Ability to work independently while also work cooperatively with Community Education staff.
• Ability to follow district, Community Education, and facility policies and procedures.
• Dependable, responsible, and punctual.
• Ability to safely supervise participants and equipment.
• CPR/First Aid certification or other applicable certification may be required depending on the program.

Job Duties:

1. Instruction/Coaching

• Provide quality instruction, coaching, or leadership appropriate to the class, activity, or sport.
• Create a positive setting that enables participants to learn, participate, have fun, and develop skills.
• Prepare and organize lessons, practices, activities, or other program content appropriate to the participants and program.
• Clearly communicate expectations, instructions, rules, and safety procedures to participants.
• Modify instruction or activities as appropriate to accommodate different skill levels and participant needs.
• Encourage participation, teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, and positive relationships.
• Maintain appropriate supervision of participants throughout the program.
• Provide feedback and encouragement to participants in a positive and constructive manner.

2. Program Preparation

• Work with Community Education staff to identify and communicate program needs prior to the start of the class, activity, or sport.
• Provide Community Education with accurate information needed to advertise and register the program.
• Identify necessary equipment, supplies, technology, facilities, or other resources needed to conduct the program.
• Prepare instructional materials, equipment, and activities prior to each session.
• Communicate promptly with Community Education staff regarding changes, cancellations, facility needs, equipment needs, or other concerns.
• Leave classrooms, fields, courts, or other facilities in an appropriate condition following each program.

3. Policies and Procedures

• Follow all district, school, Community Education, and facility policies and procedures.
• Follow all applicable safety requirements and procedures.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and conduct with all participants.
• Follow district requirements related to data privacy, participant information, and communication.
• Report accidents, injuries, behavioral concerns, or other significant issues to Community Education staff as appropriate.

4. Participant Experience

• Provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants.
• Develop positive relationships with participants and encourage continued participation in Community Education programs.
• Respond appropriately to participant questions and concerns.
• Communicate with parents/guardians when appropriate and in accordance with Community Education procedures.

5. Communication

• Communicate effectively with Community Education staff before, during, and after the program.
• Notify Community Education staff as soon as possible regarding absences, schedule changes, or other circumstances that may affect the program.
• Provide feedback regarding the program, participant needs, equipment, facilities, or future programming.

Work is performed in a variety of settings including classrooms, gyms, athletic fields, courts, community facilities, outdoor recreation areas, or other locations appropriate to the class, activity, or sport.

Physical Requirement:

Physical requirements will vary depending on the class, activity, or sport. May include standing, walking, demonstrating activities, moving equipment, and lifting supplies or equipment appropriate to the program.

Evaluation:

The Community Education Director and/or Enrichment and Recreation Coordinator will evaluate the instructor as appropriate and may use participant feedback, program observations, attendance, and other applicable information in the evaluation process.

Salary and Benefits:

The pay for this position is 70% of class revenue. You may be eligible for earned sick and safe time based on hours worked.
