Job description

The Communications Dispatcher is a vital part of the EmergencyManagement & Community Engagement team. As a CommunicationsDispatcher, the successful candidate must operate a multi-channelradio system receiving and transmitting all information promptly,accurately and in a professional manner at all times. Furtherduties include but are not limited to: Answering emergency andnon-emergency calls for service on a multi-line telephone system,Entering and retrieving information through a Computer AidedDispatch System (CAD) terminal, Responding to inquiries andcomplaints and securing emergency assistance in a timely, efficientand professional manner, Contacting and requesting services ofwreckers, emergency medical services, fire services and other lawenforcement services as well as maintenance and University call outservices, operating a computerized information network terminal,entering, and retrieving information through the Virginia CriminalInformation Network (VCIN) and the National Law EnforcementTelecommunications System (NLETS) to be disseminated by radio andtelephone. Files messages properly and maintains the proper logsand information as necessary.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  1. The ability to think and speak clearly and concisely understress.
  2. Keep abreast of the current laws related to law enforcement atthe local, state and federal levels.
  3. Verify and enter information in all Liberty UniversityDepartment call-out manuals.
  4. Make timely notifications or corrections of errors and obstaclesin the use of the system.
  5. Knowledge of disaster protocol, research and planning.
  6. Knowledge of law enforcement, fire and emergency medicaldispatch protocol.
  7. Operation of a multi-channel radio system.
  8. Operation of a multi-line telephone system.
  9. Operation of a computer aided dispatch terminal.
  10. Must keep accurate records of all radio transmissions andtelephone calls.
  11. Must utilize VCIN and NLETS properly, efficiently andaccurately.
Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies

Must be at least 21 years old, have current first aid and CPRcertifications, and industry knowledge in the field of EmergencyCommunications operations. Experience as a dispatcher is preferred. Must be able to complete certification as a dispatcher within 1year of appointment. Must not have convictions for felonies orcrimes of moral turpitude and be able to pass random drug testingto maintain employment. Effective communication both verbally andin writing. Ability to intuitively reason, analyze information andevents, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both aroutine and complex nature. Excellent computer and organizationalskills. Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds.
