Norfolk State University’s Police Department invites applicants forthe position of Dispatcher/Emergency Coordinator. The EmergencyCoordinator performs a variety of communication and operationalduties in support of public safety to the University community. Thesuccessful candidate will:
Job Duties:
- Prioritize all emergencies and non-emergency calls received andappropriately disseminate request for routine assistance andemergency services.
- Monitor all audio and video surveillance equipment, operate theVirginia Criminal Information Network and the National CrimeInformation Center computer terminal and two way hand-heldradios.
- This position is considered essential personnel which meansthat the successful candidate will be required to come to work orbe called in to work in cases of emergency, inclement weather orother staff shortages on all shifts. Must be able to Work 12 hourshifts.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Basic knowledge of work activities of a Police Department/LawEnforcement agency. Skilled in keyboarding and use of MicrosoftOffice Suite.
- Ability to work rotating shifts including nights, holidays andweekends.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
- Ability to interpret policies and procedures.
- Experienced in dealing with the public and working in an officesetting.
- Must be able to obtain Basic Dispatcher certification withinone year of hire.
- High School diploma or an equivalent combination of educationand training that provides the requisite knowledge, skills,abilities and experience.
- Skilled in the use of communication equipment including two-waytransmitter, computer systems, and video surveillanceequipment.
Additional Considerations:
- Previous experience with Law Enforcement regulations to includeincident reports and crime
- classifications.
- Certification as a Certified Emergency Coordinator, or abilityto complete course within 6 months or
- less of employment.
- Previous experience and certification in the Virginia CriminalInformation Network (VCIN) and
- National Crime Information Network systems (VCIN) or ability toobtain certification.
- Previous experience with surveillance equipment.
Employees are also required to work mandatory blackout events anddesignated high-priority University events, as assigned.

Criminal History
- 1. Conviction of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude(crimes contrary to justice, honesty, or good morals).
- 2. Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, includingtraffic violations, or the Virginia State Law equivalent within the last five (5) years.
- 3. Any conviction of Domestic Violence, including simple assaultagainst a domestic or partner, spouse, child or parent.
- 4. Any individual falling into any of the aforementioned criminalhistory categories, prior to conviction, that enters a plea agreement or other form of sentencingdisposition to the reduction of charges will be disqualified fromthe entry process.
- 5. Commission of undetected crimes of a serious or repetitivenature.
Traffic Violations
- 1. Five (5) or more negative points on a Virginia Operator’sLicense or the equivalent for out of state licenses, and/or two (2) moving violations in any state within thelast twelve (12) months.
- 2. Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs oralcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police,racing, or reckless driving or leaving the scene of an accidentwithin the last five (5) years.
Drugs
- 1. Any involvement or use in the sale, distribution, or possessionof illegal drugs.
- 2. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last five (5)years.
- 3. Illegal possession of marijuana or a derivative thereof withinthe last twelve (12) months.
- 4. Illegal possession or use of heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens orany other schedule one (1) or two (2) drug, or any derivative thereof, as defined in the Code of Virginiawithin the last ten (10) years.
