The Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute (JHMRI) – within the Johns Hopkins University Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Bloomberg School of Public Health – is the hub for a community of multidisciplinary researchers dedicated to treating, controlling, and eradicating malaria. The institute comprises 16 full-time faculty pursuing biomedical research on various aspects of malaria, supported by three administrative staff. Directed by Jane Carlton, with a team of four deputy directors, the institute's activities are reviewed annually by a Scientific Advisory Board of world-class scientists. JHMRI hosts three annual symposia recognized as premier events that inform and inspire the malaria research community.

We are seeking a Communications Associate responsible for leading the institute's strategic communications. Reporting to the Director, this role involves setting and guiding communication strategies across the website, the Malaria Minute podcast, and public relations, articulating the institute’s priorities and progress to media, stakeholders, and the public. The role includes managing brand strategy, online marketing, media relations, and community engagement, working closely with external media and donors, and coordinating with the school's central communications teams to ensure policy adherence. Regular reporting to donors is also required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Translating research into accessible content for various channels including press releases, articles, social media, podcasts, print, and websites.
  • Promoting the institute’s work and conferences across all media.
  • Implementing media and public relations strategies to enhance visibility and reputation nationally and internationally.
  • Developing stakeholder communication strategies for funders, leadership, industry partners, and policymakers.
  • Planning, designing, and managing communication and public affairs activities to elevate the institute’s profile.
  • Managing and developing the strategic communication plan.
  • Providing media outreach, maintaining relationships with media outlets, and managing communications for events, including annual meetings.

Content Development includes:

  • Creating and updating content for web and social media, including multimedia formats.
  • Writing press releases and news articles to disseminate research findings.
  • Maintaining the institute’s website content.

  • Strong understanding of web and social media best practices.
  • Excellent communication skills across various media.
  • Proven experience in professional communications.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific data for lay audiences.
  • Experience with content management systems.
